Yuna Kim's last Olympics competition, which has gathered the entire country's hopes and interest, has been degraded by an unexpected fixing of the competition and robbery of the gold medal but the KSU officials are devaluing Yuna Kim's performance to try and calm the public. This incident is being called 'the worst judging scandal in the history of Olympics figure skating', many foreign figure skating experts and media pointing out that 'Yuna Kim was robbed' and expressing sharp criticism. A petition to call for re-judgment from change.org has gathered more than 2 million signatures. However, some KSU officials, one of which is also an ISU figure skating judge, are repeating arguments put front by the Russian side to try to justify the result, evoking public resentment.

The country is in shock and rage after the figure skating Queen, Yuna Kim, was robbed of a consecutive Olympic gold medal due to the worst judging scandal in Ladies figure skating history. The Queen's swan song has been insulted.

As Ladies figure skating is traditionally considered as the 'flower of winter Olympic games' and Yuna Kim has attracted attention worldwide, this incident is being widely criticized in many countries. However, shockingly, the Korea Skating Union (KSU) influentials who should be protecting and representing their own athlete are strong counter forces to Yuna Kim.

Suspicions involving these members falsely undervaluing Yuna Kim's performance and convincing Korean Olympic Committee (KOC) officials and the media have been raised. 

Surprisingly, this international judge as well as some national figure skating officials have been undervaluing Yuna Kim and being generous to a Japanese skater's incomplete techniques for the past couple of years.

The whole country's attention

On Friday, April 21, 2014 at about 3:50am, Yuna Kim's second performance at the Sochi Olympics started. Even at late hours on a week day, the country's viewer ratings passed 30%. This is because Yuna Kim, a gold medal favorite for the 'flower of the winter

Olympics' ladies figure skating, was attempting to win a historic consecutive Olympic gold medal.

This has never been successful since Katarina Witt in 1988 winter Olympic games. Yuna Kim has been more than an excellent athlete for many years, she was an icon, a symbol of South Korea to the world. Korea has not seen an athlete who has such an unparalleled presence in a sport and international status. Hence, citizens of Korea stayed up to watch the games with bated breath. Odd judging and the soaring components scores for Russian skaters, Italy's Kostner and other competitors added to the increased tension.

The home-support atmosphere of the ice rink in Sochi was dominating. Especially, for the second skater in the last group, host country's own Adelina Sotnikova was rewarded with scores transcending common sense - decimal points behind Yuna Kim's free skating world record set in 2010 Olympics.

Sotnikova's total scores from the short program and free skating were about 50 points higher than her scores from last year's World Champiomships. Her skating skills were not vastly different compared to one year ago. In such atmosphere, Yuna Kim stood on ice as the last competitor. Most skaters are relunctant to skate last due to the ice quality and pressures coming from knowing other skaters' performances and scores.

Yuna Kim's free skate started amidst the Russian crowd hoping for her mistake, other third party audience and a few but passionate Korean fans. With the success of a triple jump combination of the highest value, Yuna Kim's quality program ensued.

She skated a clean program, landing a difficult lutz in the second half of the program, and displaying another level of skating skills, jump scales and interpretation.

The Russian camera angle, which was broadcasted worldwide, makes Yuna Kim's performance less grandeur compared to how it actually was on the ice but the United States' NBC version clearly shows the difference between Kim and Sotnikova, even to the untrained eye. Foreign commentators and journalists also noted that Yuna Kim had overwhelmed the audience.

The shocking results

But Yuna Kim's free skating score was 5 points below Adelina Sotnikova's. Many commentators worldwide couldn't believe their eyes. Many have sensed a strange atmosphere at the rink that day but the idea of Sotnikova's mistake-ridden performance scoring higher than Yuna Kim's clean program hadn't crossed anyone's mind.

The French commentator yelled out "NO" after Kim's scores were announced. There also were some commentators who didn't seem to welcome the idea of an Asian skater accomplishing the historical consecutive Olympic gold medal win or express any concern over the result; but those without personal stakes or unfriendly attitude towards Asian skaters all criticized what happened.

Katarina Witt, the second woman to win back to back Olympic gold medal in 1988, gave an interview on Germany's ARD saying, "I am angry. These days, the viewers can check how the 10 components were carried out and each element's base values." She also said "Yuna Kim's performance today gave me goosebumos and I thought for sure, she would win the gold medal." She also exclaimed, "something needs to be done about this." Sonia Bianchetti, a former ISU official, pointed out "There is no doubt that Adelina is a

marvellous, very promising young girl, technically fantastic, but at a sidereal distance from Yuna and Carolina as far as the Program Components are concerned. While Adelina just skated her planned program, both Carolina and Yuna expressed in the best possible way the art and the beauty of figure skating." Many other skating experts including Michael Wiess (3-time US national champion) and Jamie Sale (2002 Olympics pair skating gold medalist) have also criticized the ISU, saying that Yuna Kim deserved the gold medal and Sotnikova should have scored less than Carolina Kostner.

Media across various countries also published articles expressing strong criticism. The United States, Austrailia, Italy, Canada, France and other questioned the result. Italy’s La Gazzetta dello Sport wrote, “Yuna Kim ends her competitive skating career with a silver medal in her second Olympic games due to unfair judging” and “2010 Vancouver’s queen settles with a silver with unfair scores that do not match her skills.”

Many neutral figure skating officials agree that Sotnikova, even with home advantage, should have been placed 3rd on the podium.

A planned “fix”

In truth, it is more appropriate to call this judging scandal a “fix”. When the athlete, coaching staff or judges purposefully manipulate the result, the competition is called to be “fixed”. Even before the Ladies figure skating games started, France’s L'Équipe quoted an anonymous Russian coach who said “Russia and the United States have set up a “proposed barter” to help each other at the Sochi Olympic figure skating events.”

Moreover, it has been pointed out that from training of the figure skating judges to allocation of judges, the ISU has favored countries like Russia and Japan. USA Today’s sports journalist, Christine Brennan, writes that a high-ranking Olympic figure skating official who wished to remain anonymous said that “geographic makeup of the judging panel was clearly slanted towards (Olympic gold medalist) Adelina Sotnikova” and criticized the current anonymous judging system by writing, “so a cheating judge, or two or three, can hide within this system and never be exposed.”

Related to this topic, it is important to note that one of the judges in the free skate included Ukraine’s Yury Balkov, a judge who was suspended for 1 year after trying to fix the 1998 Nagano Olympics. Another judge was Alla Shethovtseva, the wife of Valentin Piseev who served as the president of Russian Figure Skating Union in 2011. She has also judged in all the recent competitions Sotnikova participated in. Shethovtseva was caught on camera, hugging Sotnikova like a family member after the results were called out. This directly showed the kind of relationship she had with Sotnikova. Moreover, the technical panel who decides the levels of program elements was led by Alexander Lakernik, The Vice President of Figure Skating Federation of Russia.

Lakernik is also a chairman of the ISU technical committee who has influence over training of international judges. An American journalist who covered the game in Sochi explained the slanted air over the judging panel since the Team event, “It was impossible for Yuna Kim to win the gold medal without an armored car.”

France’s L'Équipe wrote “they are heading towards corruption”, “such a scandal will continue to fire distrust in this sport”, strongly criticizing what happened. In fact, the short program scores were also problematic. 1st Yuna Kim, 2nd Sotnikova and 3rd Kostner were only separated by decimal points. Many figure skating experts say that, even with home advantage, Yuna Kim should have been placed at least 5 points ahead.

With such judge allocations, Yuna Kim was given questionably low scores for her executions, while Sotnikova was awarded unjustly high scores for the low level skating skills and program completion. What is more surprising is that Sotnikova was only 0.09 points short of Yuna Kim in Program Components.

PCS includes skating skills, transition/linking footwork, performance and execution, composition and choreography, as well as interpretation and timing. The results show that Sotnikova was almost on par with Yuna Kim. This has brought in heavy criticism from Korean as well as international figure skating experts. A more objective appraisal is possible after viewing the United States’ NBC broadcast without commentary.

The Russian broadcast was shot poorly, raising suspicions that it was done on purpose to undermine Yuna Kim’s performance. The poor camera angle adds to the suspicion that Russia started buying off judges since 1-2 years ago. Putin prepared for this fix for a long time; not too improbable since Russia was the culprit behind 2002 Olympics figure skating scandal.

Also, Sotnikova had one more triple jump than Yuna Kim but Asada Mao, who had more triple jumps than Sotnikova, scored 7 points behind. Figure skating is not simply a jump-counting game – there are other components at play, as well as the actual executions, that get incorporated in the final score.

Another point to note, Sotnikova has never won World Championships, European Figure Skating Championships or Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final in the past 3 years. But her PCS increased about 20 points compared to her score 2 months ago with the same program. The technical score may increase short term with changes in jumps, spins or executions but a 20-point increase in 2 months with the same program has never been possible in figure skating.

National influential, in opposition?

Korean athletes have been robbed of gold medals before in the Olympics due to judging controversies. However, these events were not able to gather worldwide attention and it was not possible to overturn the decision even with an immediate protest.

The backlash of this ‘judging scandal’ is pronounced because the world was interested to witness Yuna Kim’s historical consecutive gold medal win in the widely anticipated ladies’ figure skating competition in the Winter Olympics. This unique world media attention for a Korean athlete is advantageous. It may not be impossible to regain the gold medal with the current situation. In 2002, the pair skating event was also under criticism in Salt Lake Olympics. The Canadian Staking Union reacted powerfully with a formal complaint and received a joint gold medal.

Compared to the Canadian skaters in 2002, Yuna Kim’s gold medal is Sochi is even clearer. However, NBC, who’s already purchased the next Olympics broadcasting rights, is writing down Yuna Kim’s performance, calling it not enough to win 1st place. Some point out that NBC might be worried about decreasing view ratings in figure skating after such scandal.

Like so, according to personal stakes or interest, some argue that Yuna Kim “wasn’t good enough for 1st place” or “she was not enough to be matchless.” Especially, the suspected culprit behind this rigging, Russia, as well as Japan who has kept Kim in check via various methods have expressed similar opinions.

Even in Korea, those with an incomplete knowledge of figure skating, are comparing Yuna Kim to a Korean athlete of a different event and devaluing Kim’s performance. If the judging was fair, Yuna Kim should have been ahead by at least 30 points. The KSU first needs to file a formal complaint to the ISU to correct the unjust result and end the false arguments brought on by some national and international media.

An IOC representative stated that “first the formal complaint needs to be filed to the ISU before we can take further actions.” Reclaiming the gold medal is the least KSU can do to protect the rights and interests of an athlete who had to make a lone stance against politics with her skating skills, and will become a stepping stone for boosting national prestige.

Yuna Kim has already served as an irreplaceable symbol in bringing the Winter Olympics to Pyeongchang. Also, she is the first female athlete to be appointed UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. She has donated to the help those affected by the earthquake in Haiti and Fukushima, and become a role model to many worldwide.

However, instead of preparing for a formal complaint to get back Yuna Kim’s gold medal, the KSU is being criticized for trying to calm the public sentiment. What is even more shocking is that some KSU influential are interviewing with many broadcasting companies and devaluing Yuna Kim’s performance to change the public’s opinion on the filing of complaint.

Especially, Lee Ji Hee, a figure skating influential in the KSU and an international figure skating judge at the ISU, is being criticized for trying to stop the complaint from being filed by disparaging Yuna Kim’s performance. Other authorities and Korean figure skating fans are outraged, saying “Korean judges are merely acting as puppets for the foreign influential associated with the ISU to change rules for the benefit of other countries’ athletes, instead of protecting Korean athletes’ rights and interests.” This person has been subtly devaluing Yuna Kim and generous towards Japanese skaters like Asada Mao. She is also known to be close to another Asian official in the ISU, Hiramatsu Junko.

Conscious figure skating officials in Korea as well as those worldwide are voicing that this judging result must be corrected as it will adversely affect figure skating’s authority in the sporting world, tear down the definition of sportsmanship and harm the progress of Korean figure skating. The majority opinion is that first and foremost, the KSU must file a formal complaint to the ISU.

온 국민의 기대와 관심을 모은 김연아의 마지막 올림픽 은퇴무대가 예상치 못한 ‘승부조작’으로 금메달을 도둑 맞으며 능욕당했지만 대한빙상경기연맹 유력 인사들은 오히려 김연아의 이번 경기를 저평가하면서 여론을 잠재우려 하고 있다. 이 사건은 ‘올림픽 피겨 역사상 최악의 판정 스캔들’로 불리며 세계적인 이슈가 됐으며, 해외 전문가들과 각국 언론들이 ‘김연아가 금메달을 빼앗겼다’며 날 선 비판을 하고 있다. 해외 청원사이트의 경기 재심사를 요구하는 서명은 200만 명을 넘어섰다. 하지만 국제빙상연맹 피겨 심판이자 대한빙상경기연맹 유력인사들은 이번 판정을 정당화하기 위해 러시아 등에서 내세운 논리를 그들의 대변인인 양 주장하며 공식 제소를 막고 있어 공분을 자아내고 있다. <편집자주>

[주간현대=조미진 기자] 피겨여왕 김연아가 소치 동계올림픽에서 여자 피겨 희대의 ‘판정 스캔들’로 올림픽 2연패라는 대업과, 금메달을 빼앗겨 온 국민이 충격과 분노에 빠졌다. 피겨여왕의 마지막 올림픽 은퇴무대가 능욕당한 것이다. 

 

여자 싱글 피겨 종목은 전통적으로 동계올림픽의 꽃으로 여겨진데다 당초 김연아가 세계적 주목을 받아왔기에 이 사태는 해외 각국에서도 대서특필되며 비판을 받고 있다. 그러나 충격적인 사실은 자국 선수를 보호하고 권익을 적극 대변해야 할 대한빙상경기연맹 피겨 유력 인사들이 사실상 김연아의 강력한 견제세력이라는 것. 

 

이들이 김연아의 올림픽 연기를 사실 이상으로 깎아내리며 대한체육회 등의 체육계 고위 인사들과 여론을 설득시키고 있다는 의혹이 제기되고 있다. 

 

놀랍게도 이 국제심판을 비롯한 국내 몇몇 유력 피겨인사들이 자국 선수인 김연아를 저평가하는 반면 일본선수의 불완전한 기술수행에 관대한 평가를 내리는 등의 견제는 수년전부터 지속돼 왔다는 비판이 대두되고 있다.

온 국민의 관심사

지난 2월21일 금요일 새벽 3시 50분경 소치올림픽 여자 피겨스케이팅 김연아의 두 번째 경기인 프리스케이팅이 시작됐다. 평일 깊은 새벽인데도 전국의 순간시청률은 30%를 넘어섰다. 김연아가 동계올림픽의 꽃으로 불리는 여자 싱글 피겨의 유력 우승 후보이자 세계 피겨 역사의 한 획을 그을 올림픽 2연패에 도전했기 때문이다. 

 

지난 1988년 동계 올림픽 때 카타리나 비트 이후로 아무도 이루지 못한 도전이었다. 사실 김연아는 최근 수년 동안 그냥 뛰어난 운동선수가 아닌 대한민국이 세계에 내세우는 아이콘이자 상징과 같은 존재였다. 한 종목의 독보적인 존재감과 더불어 이 정도의 세계적인 위상·인지도까지 동시에 가진 스포츠스타는 우리나라 역사상 존재하지 않았기 때문이다. 

그렇기에 깊은 새벽에도 국민들은 손에 땀을 쥐고 경기를 지켜보고 있었다. 그런데 이날 프리 경기의 앞선 러시아 선수들, 이탈리아의 코스트너 등에게 연기 수행에 비해 몇십 점 폭등한 점수가 주어지는 의아한 판정이 계속돼 지켜보는 국민들의 긴장감은 더욱 커졌다. 

 

러시아 소치의 현지 경기장은 자국 선수 중심의 분위기가 지배적이었다. 특히 마지막 조 2번째에 등장한 개최국 러시아 선수 아델리나 소트니코바에게 상식을 뛰어넘는 큰 점수가 부여됐다. 김연아가 2010년 올림픽 때 세운 프리 세계 최고기록인 150점에 불과 소수점 차이만 모자란 고득점이었다. 

 

쇼트와 프리 총점도 이 선수가 불과 1년 전 세계선수권에서보다 50점가량 높았다. 스케이팅의 수준은 1년 전과 큰 차이가 없었다. 이런 분위기 속에서 모든 선수들의 연기가 끝난 가장 마지막에 김연아가 등장했다. 사실 대회의 마지막 순서는 피겨 선수들이 가장 꺼려한다. 경기장 링크의 질도 좋지 않을뿐더러 타 선수들의 점수나 경기수행을 어느 정도 알기에 심적 부담이 상당하기 때문이다.

유력 우승후보인 타국 선수가 실수하길 바라는 많은 러시아 관중들, 제3국의 관중들, 그리고 소수지만 열정적인 응원을 하는 한국 관중들 속에서 김연아의 프리 경기는 그렇게 시작됐다. 가장 큰 득점이 걸린 3회전 연속점프를 시작으로 수준 높은 연기가 이어졌다. 

 

후반부 고비인 트리플 러츠 고난도 점프도 착지가 어려운 상황에서 잘 컨트롤 하며 성공시키는 등 운동 능력과 스케이팅 기술, 점프의 스케일, 연기력 등에서 차원이 다름을 보여주며 무결점 연기를 해낸 것이다.

물론 러시아 방송사는 우리나라를 비롯한 세계 각국에 송출하는 김연아의 영상을 실제보다 못해 보이게 촬영했지만 美 NBC에서 촬영한 영상으로 소트니코바의 연기와 비교하면 일반인도 한눈에 김연아가 훨씬 낫다는 걸 알 수 있었다. 현장에서 보면 그 차이는 더욱 명확해진다. 현장에 있던 외국 기자나 외국 해설위원들은 김연아가 관중들을 압도했다고 밝히기도 했다.

충격적인 점수 발표

하지만 김연아의 프리 점수가 아델리나 소트니코바보다 무려 5점이나 낮게 발표됐다. 생방송 중계를 하던 세계 각국의 수많은 해설진들은 김연아의 점수를 보고 눈을 의심했다. 현장의 이상한 기운을 감지했던 사람이 많았지만 김연아의 클린 연기보다 실수가 있었던 소트니코바에게 더 높은 점수를 줄 것이라곤 생각지 못한 것이다. 

 

프랑스 중계 해설자는 김연아의 점수를 보고 ‘NO’를 외쳤다. 아시아 선수가 역사적인 여자 피겨 올림픽 2연패를 달성하는 것이 반갑지만은 않다는 뉘앙스를 풍기거나 문제제기를 크게 하지 않는 해설자도 있긴 했다. 하지만 이해관계나 아시아 선수에 대한 배타성을 가지지 않은 많은 세계 피겨 전문가들이 충격을 받고 판정결과를 비판했다.

지난 1988년 여자 피겨 올림픽 2연패를 달성한 카타리나 비트는 독일 국영방송사 ARD에 출연해 “완전히 열받았다, 요즘엔 열 개의 요소가 잘 구성됐는지, 기본 점수가 얼마인지 시청자들이 확인할 수 있다”며 “오늘 김연아 연기는 정말 소름이 돋았고, 금메달을 확신했다”고 말했다. 아울러 “이번 일은 그냥 넘어가서는 안 된다“며 격분했다.

전 국제빙상연맹 의장 소니아 비앙게티는 “소트니코바가 훌륭한 연기를 펼쳤으며 전도유망한 선수지만 기술점수에서 김연아, 캐롤리나 코스트너(3위 선수)와는 ‘별과 별 거리’만큼의 차이가 나야 했다”고 지적했다. 그 외에도 남자 싱글 3회 미국 내셔널 챔피언 마이클 와이즈, 2002년 올림픽 페어 금메달리스트 제이미 살레 등 많은 전문가들이 김연아가 금메달이어야 하며, 소트니코바는 3위였던 캐롤리나 코스트너보다도 점수가 적었어야 했다고 국제빙상연맹을 강하게 비판했다.

세계 각국 언론들도 크게 문제제기를 하며 보도했다. 미국, 호주, 이탈리아, 캐나다, 프랑스 등 해외 언론들은 잘못된 판정에 대한 강한 의혹을 제기했다. 이탈리아의 유력 매체 라 가제타 델로 스포트는 “김연아는 정당하지 못한 심사 탓에 두 번째 올림픽에서 은메달을 받으며 선수 생활을 마감하게 됐다”며 “2010 밴쿠버 여왕은 그가 보여준 실력에 훨씬 못 미치는 잘못된 점수로 은메달에 머물러야 했다”고 안타까움을 드러냈다.

중립적인 입장에 위치한 피겨전문가들은 하나같이 이번에 금메달을 획득한 소트니코바가 홈 이점을 감안하더라도 3위가 적절했다는 분석이 주를 이루고 있다.

준비된 ‘승부조작’

사실 이번 판정 스캔들은 ‘승부 조작’이라고 정의하는 것이 적절하다. 승부를 내는 경기에서 선수 및 코칭스태프, 심판 등이 고의적으로 경기 결과를 조작하는 행위를 승부조작이라고 지칭하기 때문이다. 프랑스 유력 매체 르퀴프는 여자 싱글 경기가 시작되기도 전에 “미국과 러시아가 피겨스케이팅에서 서로 금메달을 따도록 도와주기로 담합했다”는 소식을 세계에서 가장 먼저 보도하기도 했다. 

 

또한 국제빙상연맹에서 피겨심판 교육이나 대회의 심판 배정 등을 담당하는 고위 인사들부터 러시아, 일본 등으로 편중돼 있다는 지적이 있다. 미국 USA Today의 스포츠 평론가 크리스틴 브레넌은 익명을 요구한 미 피겨연맹의 고위 관리의 말을 인용해 “프리 스케이팅 심판 구성을 이룬 국가배정은 당연히 소트니코바를 위한 것이었다”며 현재 익명의 심판들이 채점 하는 시스템으로는 누가 담합했는지 절대로 알아낼 수 없다고 판정시스템의 문제점을 지적했다.

이와 관련해 프리 경기 채점에 참가한 심판 중 우크라이나의 유리 발코프는 1998년 나가노 올림픽에서 승부조작 의혹으로 1년간 자격이 정지된 경력이 있다. 또 이번 대회 심판이었던 러시아의 알라 셰코브체바는 2011년 러시아 피겨연맹 회장 알렉산드르 고르쉬코프의 부인이며 소트니코바가 근래 참가한 대회 때마다 심판을 맡아왔다. 

 

소트니코바의 1위가 확정되자마자 이 심판과 소트니코바가 가족처럼 포옹하는 장면이 미국의 한 방송사 카메라에 포착되기도 했다. 그들의 각별한 관계를 단적으로 보여 준 것이다. 또한 각 기술 수행요소의 레벨을 결정짓는 역할을 하는 기술 심판이 러시아 스케이팅연맹의 부회장 알렉산더 라커닉에 의해 리드됐다. 

 

라커닉은 국제빙상연맹 피겨 기술위원회 위원장으로 국제심판 교육 등을 좌지우지할 수 있는 직책을 갖고 있기도 하다. 현지에서 경기를 지켜봤던 미국의 한 기자는 “김연아가 장갑차를 타고 가지 않는 한 금메달을 갖고 돌아갈 수 없는 분위기였다”며 피겨 단체전부터 감지된 극도로 러시아에 치우친 판정과 분위기를 설명했다.

프랑스 매체 레퀴프는 “그들은 타락으로 가고 있다”며 “이러한 스캔들은 이 스포츠에 대한 불신이 지속되도록 할 것”이라고 강하게 비난했다. 사실 첫날 쇼트 경기의 점수도 문제가 컸다. 1위 김연아, 2위 소트니코바, 3위 코스트너가 소수점 차이밖에 나지 않았던 것이다. 홈 이점을 감안하더라도 김연아가 1위, 2위와는 최소 5점 이상 차이가 났어야 했다는 것이 중립적인 입장에 선 세계 전문가들의 평가다. 

이러한 심판 구성을 배경으로 각 요소의 수행 점수가 김연아의 고차원적인 수행에 비해 의아스러울 정도로 적은 점수가 부여됐고, 소트니코바는 기술의 정확성, 완성도 면에서 낮은 수준을 구사했는데도 관례와 규정을 깨는 고득점을 받았다. 더욱 놀라운 것은 프로그램 구성점수(PCS)에서 소트니코바가 김연아보다 불과 0.09점이 적다는 것이다. 

 

PCS의 하위 평가항목들은 기술, 변화, 연기력, 안무, 곡의 해석(표현력)인데 여기에서 소트니코바가 김연아와 거의 동등하다는 것이 이번 판정결과다. 이에 대해 국내와 해외를 막론한 전문가들은 완전히 잘못 됐다며 비판하고 있다. 미국 NBC 방송사의 무해설 중계 영상을 보면 두 선수에 대한 좀 더 객관적인 평가가 가능하다. 

 

국내 중계 영상은 러시아 방송사에서 송출한 것인데 실제에 비해 의도적으로 김연아를 못해보이게 촬영하지 않았냐는 의혹이 제기될 만큼 실제보다 못해보이게 촬영됐다. 이 촬영 의혹 또한 러시아에서 1~2년 전부터 심판 매수 작업을 했다는 의혹과 동일선상에서 나오고 있다. 푸틴이 장기적으로 준비한 ‘승부 조작’ 작업이며, 2002년 올림픽 피겨 판정 스캔들의 주인공이었던 러시아기에 개연성이 크다는 것이다.

또한 소트니코바가 김연아보다 3회전 점프 하나를 더 뛰었지만 아사다 마오는 소트니코바보다 점프를 더 많이 뛰었는데 7점이나 더 낮게 나왔다. 피겨스케이팅은 그 외 요소들의 수행 수준이 종합적으로 점수에 반영된다. 단순히 점프 개수로만 종합 점수가 결정 되는 종목이 아닌 것이다.

또한 소트니코바는 세계선수권, 유럽선수권, 그랑프리 파이널에서 지난 3년간 우승한 적이 한 번도 없었다. 그런데 PCS가 불과 2개월 전에 같은 프로그램으로 받은 점수보다 20점이나 더 받았다. 기술 점수는 점프나 스핀의 그때그때 수행에 따라 단기간 점수 향상이 가능할지 몰라도 PCS는 같은 시즌의 2달 동안 20점이 증가한다는 것은 피겨 종목에서 가능한 변동폭이 아니다. 

국내 유력인사가 견제?

 

사실 우리나라 선수들이 올림픽의 타 종목에서 판정 논란으로 억울하게 금메달을 빼앗긴 일은 과거에도 있었다. 하지만 세계적 주목을 끌지 못하는 종목들이었기에 바로 항의를 해도 결과를 뒤집을 수 없었다. 

 

그러나 이번은 동계올림픽에서 손꼽히는 세계적 관심 종목인 여자 싱글 피겨스케이팅이며 김연아의 2연패 달성여부가 세계적으로도 손꼽히는 이슈였기에 이번 ‘판정 스캔들’의 파장은 크다. 세계 여론이 대한민국 스포츠역사상 유례없이 우리나라 선수에게 유리한 방향으로 화제가 되고 있는 것이다. 

 

이런 흐름을 잘 이용한다면 잘못된 판정을 바로잡고 금메달을 되찾아오는 것도 가능성이 없지 않다. 과거 2002년 솔트레이크 동계올림픽에서도 페어 부문에 판정 논란이 일었다. 당시 캐나다 빙상연맹에서 공식 제소를 하는 등 강력하게 대응해 공동 금메달이 수여된 바 있다. 

 

사실 당시 캐나다 선수들보다 현재 김연아 선수의 1위는 더 분명한 상황이다. 그러나 차기 올림픽 중계권 등을 미리 구매한 미국 NBC 방송사 등은 김연아가 1등 하기에 충분치 못했다며 저평가하고 있다. 이와 관련해 앞으로 피겨 중계 시청률이 떨어지거나 피겨 인기가 떨어지는 것을 우려, 나온 결과에 김연아의 평가를 끼워 맞춘다는 지적이 있다. 

 

이렇게 자신의 이해관계에 따라 김연아가 ‘1위 할 만하지 못했다’거나 ‘독보적이진 않았으니 이렇게 된 게 아니냐’는 시선도 고개를 들고 있다. 특히 이번 승부조작 의혹의 가해자로 지목되는 러시아, 선수 시절 내내 여러 방법을 동원해 김연아를 견제 해온 일본 등에서 김연아의 이번연기에 대한 지엽적인 저평가가 이뤄지고 있다. 

 

국내에서까지 피겨스케이팅 종목을 제대로 알지 못하는 사람들이 타 종목 국내 선수와 비교하며 김연아를 저평가하는 일이 발생하고 있다. 사실 정당하게 판정이 내려졌다면 김연아는 합계 점수에서 2위와 30점 이상 차이로 압도적으로 우승했어야 했다.사실과 다른 이러한 국내·해외의 일부 억울한 저평가를 종식시키려면 대한빙상경기연맹이 우선 국제빙상연맹에 ‘제소’를 해서 결과를 올바르게 바꿔야 한다.

 

IOC도 대변인을 통해 ‘일단 국제빙상연맹에 공식 제소가 접수돼야 우리가 후속 조치를 취할 수 있다’고 밝혔다. 금메달을 되찾는 것은 실력만으로 외롭게 피겨 강국들의 정치력에 맞서며 나라의 이미지와 위상을 드높인 자국 인재를 위한 권익 보호이며, 향후 그의 세계적 영향력으로 국위선양 하는데도 의미있는 디딤돌이 될 것이라는게 중론이다. 

 

이미 2018 평창 동계 올림픽 유치과정에서 김연아는 타인이 대체할 수 없는 상징적 역할을 맡아 큰 공로를 한 바 있다. 또한 여자 운동 선수 가운데서 세계 최초로 유니세프 국제 친선대사로 선정 돼 아이티 지진, 일본 후쿠시마 지진 등 국제사회의 재해에 매번 성금을 기탁하는 등 국내외에서 자선 활동을 활발히 벌여 세계에 귀감이 되고 있다.

하지만 대한빙상경기연맹은 김연아의 금메달을 되찾기 위해 국제빙상연맹에 대한 공식제소를 준비하기는커녕 제소를 요구하는 국내여론을 잠재우려 한다는 비판을 받고 있다. 더욱 충격적인 것은 대한빙상경기연맹의 유력 피겨인사들이 여러 방송사, 언론들과 인터뷰하며 김연아의 이번 경기를 지엽적인 관점에서 저평가해, 제소하라는 여론을 적극적으로 바꾸려고 한다는 것이다.

특히 국제빙상연맹 심판이자 대한빙상경기연맹 피겨 유력인사인 이지희씨 등이 국제빙상연맹에서 자신의 입지를 유지하기 위해 김연아의 경기내용을 폄하하며 제소를 막기 위해 힘쓰고 있다는 비판이 일고 있다. 이와 관련해 국내 피겨팬 등 관계자들은 “한국인 국제심판들이 한국선수 권익보호는커녕 깎아내리기 바쁘며, 각자 자국 선수에 유리한 룰 개정, 판정을 적극 반영하려는 국제빙상연맹 외국 유력인사들의 하수인 노릇에만 열을 올린다”며 분노하고 있다. 

 

사실 이 국내 유력 인사들은 수년 동안 김연아를 미묘하게 저평가하고 일본의 아사다 마오 등에게는 관대한 평가를 해왔다. 이와 관련해 대한빙상경기연맹의 유력 인사는 국제빙상연맹 이사인 일본인 히라마츠 준코와 가까운 사이로도 알려져 있다. 

피겨스케이팅의 스포츠적 권위를 추락시키고, 스포츠 정의를 무너뜨리며, 향후 한국 피겨스케이팅 발전에 심각한 악영향을 줄 이번 사태와 판정 결과가 하루 빨리 바로 잡혀야 한다는 것이 세계 피겨 관계자들과 의식 있는 한국 피겨계의 목소리다. 먼저는 대한빙상경기연맹이 국제빙상연맹에 제소하는 것이 시급하다는 게 중론이다.
