With World Championships of figure skating beginning on Monday, South Korean Olympic Committee has said that it will file a complaint to the International Skating Union about an alleged breach of the code of ethics during the ladies competition at the Sochi Olympics. It's a complaint the Koreans are afraid they'll be punished for.
The complaint named judges Alla Shekhovtseva of Russia and Yuri Balkov of Ukraine. Shekhovtseva is married to the head of the Russian figure skating organization and was the judge seen hugging gold medal winner Adelina Sotnikova moments after the competition, and Balkov, who allegedly has ties to Moscow, was suspended for trying to fix a result during the 1998 Olympics. Both judges scored the ladies free skating competition, which saw Sotnikova receive the highest scores of her life and Kim Yu-na a silver medal free skate that many experts say was underscored.
The KOC and Korean Skating Union are asking for a thorough investigation of the judging composition and whether it was biased toward Sotnikova. And they filed the complaint knowing that it might result in retaliation. "We had to be very careful since an appeal or a complaint could strain relationships with international judges and bring disadvantages to our players in international games," a KOC official said on Friday.
The KSU and KOC's fear of retaliation and reluctance are pretty disconcerting. And it shows how difficult it is to change the current judging system. How are countries supposed to complain if their skaters scores can be held as ransom? And what does it say about the ISU and the kind of environment it has set if countries like South Korea feel they will be punished for voicing their concern?
The unavoidable question is whether the South Korean delegation's allegations about "suspicions of bias" have any merit. Over the past few weeks, Sotnikova and Kim's programs have been examined again and again, backwards and forwards. The Wire has pointed out that there are some odd things that didn't come to the judges' attention, like what looks to be Sotnikova's under-rotation on this triple loop. Her back foot shouldn't be moving when it hits the ice:

And when you look at things like score sheets, there are some curious wrinkles like the abundance of +3 GOEs (the highest scores judges can give) on Sotnikova's and fellow Russian Julia Lipnitskaya's programs, but the utter lack of them on the other ladies' scores. Since then there have been other discrepancies, like the pointsawarded on Kim's and Sotnikova's footwork sequences, the meteoric rise of Sotnikova's artistry scores, and the IOC publishing fake quotes from Kim about how Sotnikova was a better skater that night.
All these problems and all these conspiracy theories stem from one problem: figure skating is a subjective sport that needs boundaries, transparency, the minimization of bias — and the ISU has never really figured out a way to do any of those well. It doesn't seem to want to change. This is how the ISU determines conflicts of interest currently:
The term ”family” as used in this Rule shall be understood as including all persons who, due to their relationships, may reasonably appear to be in a conflict of interest position regarding a competing Skater, ineligible person or remunerated Coach.
How does Shekhovtseva, with her marital ties to the Russian skating federation, not fall under that definition? That doesn't happen very often in other sports. For example: it'd be like if John Calipari's wife was allowed to ref Kentucky's next game in the NCAA basketball tournament ... if the next game were a national championship. That idea would be killed the minute it was even thought of.
Yet, in ice skating that's allowed. Or even encouraged. "Would you rather have an idiot acting as a judge than a good one who is a relative of the manager of a federation?" Ottavio Cinquanta, the ISU President asked the Chicago Tribune the day after Sotnikova's gold medal win.
The ideal choice here is obviously neither, but Cinquanta seems okay with "good" judges who might be biased. "It is far more important to have a good judge than a possible conflict of interest," he said.

The way figure skating's governing organization have acted in the wake of Adelina Sotnikova's contentious gold medal win has been a study how to act suspiciously guilty after a controversial result. That odd behavior continued on Thursday when the International Olympic Committee offered up quotes from silver medalist Kim Yu-na admitting that Adelina Sotnikova was the best skater of the night. But Kim had never said such a thing.
The fabricated quotes appear on a story (without a byline) published on the official Olympic website, and refer to Kim as a gracious and accepting loser. Here's a screenshot from a Google cache version of the site:
The quotes the IOC used were caught by Kim and her agent. "We confirmed IOC's article. It's not what Kim Yu-na have said. We are working on it to handle this," an official of Kim's agency told the Chosun Ilbo news outlet. And Kim's agency'sresponse and demand for the article to be changed has been catching fire in South Korea.
If you look at how the IOC article appears now, the quotes are gone. But there's no correction or reference of an update:

The quotes IOC attributed to Kim also don't fit with what she has officially said about the competition. Earlier this week she told fans that she (like pretty much everyone else in the figure skating world who isn't Russian) thought the judging was inexplicable, but refused to look back. "It was all very absurd but I was just happy that it was all finished, she told fans in South Korea. "I have never gone over the result and thought what might have been," Kim added.
While this might just be a case of irresponsible attribution and misquoting, the IOC's blunder and lack of formal correction will only add fuel to the controversy surrounding Sotnikova's gold medal. There are many people (over 2 million people signed an online petition asking for an investigation or explanation) who aren't happy with her win and there are lingering questions about the judging and integrity of the sport.
What isn't helping is that the sport's governing bodies are pretending like the complaints have been quashed. The International Skating Union's basic message is that they stand by the result, though they have been caught deleting and blocking users on social media and removing pieces of their contact information to tamp down dissent. Using made-up quotes that make Kim seem complicit with the result only bring up more questions.
We reached out the IOC regarding the deleted quotes and the lack of a correction or explanation, but have not yet received a response.

Adelina Sotnikova, the controversial 17-year-old figure skating champion of the Sochi Olympic Games, looks like she'll be ducking the competition at the World Championships at the end of this month. Those who had questions about her gold medal aren't going to be satisfied.
Entry List for the World Championships
The entries for the World Championships in Saitama, Japan were announced on Wednesday. And Sotnikova's name came up as a substitute along with two other Russians.
Is isn't that abnormal to see Olympic medalists retire or skip the World Championships right after Olympic wins. Understandably, there's some burnout. And for some skaters, the Olympics was their final competition. Kim Yu-na, the 2010 gold medalist and 2014 silver medalist, announced her retirement on the same night of her free skate. And the ice dancing teams of Meryl Davis and Charlie White and Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, gold and silver medalists respectively at this year's Olympics, are skipping Worlds too.
But those skaters have legacies. Sotnikova doesn't. She's cobbling her legacy together on a controversial gold medal. And Sotnikova's case is a little different, particularly because she has a lot to prove.
Many People Don't Think Sotnikova Deserves Her Gold Medal
Even though we're weeks removed from Sotnikova's gold medal win, there are people who still believe Sotnikova's medal to be unfair or rigged (see: the online petition with over 2 million signatures). "If Adelina was not from Russia, she would never get those marks," Dave Lease, one the creators of The Skating Lesson blog, told us at the time.
"I definitely think it was home court advantage [for Sotnikova]," former skater and 1998 US silver medalist Naomi Nari Nam concurred. "It was very inflated."
The Games were in Sochi; a Russian judge married to the president of the Russian Skating federation scored Sotnikova's long program and hugged Sotnikova after she won gold; and Sotnikova's scores were the highest she's ever recorded— there are enough unanswered questions there to warrant suspicion.
For Sotnikova's doubters, the World Championships were an opportunity to see if Sotnikova could medal under what they believe are fairer circumstances. "On the heels of a controversial victory, Adelina Sotnikova had an opportunity to legitimize her Olympic win at the World Championships," Lease told The Wire. "Out-skating everyone would give credence and quiet her critics. Conversely, failing to back it up could be embarrassing or leave a blemish on the result."
Sotnikova Had Said She Wanted to Win Every Competition
In the days after her win, Sotnikova was very eager in reminding all of us that she wasn't a one-medal wonder. "I want all the gold that there is out there, everything that exists in figure skating. In all events, in all competitions," she said the day after her victory last month, sounding like a Bond villain. "Yes, I am the Olympic champion, but this is not the end of it."
A World Championship qualifies as "gold that there is out there." If Sotnikova was being genuine, then it raises questions about why she isn't pursuing a World Championship. Sotnikova set the table, invited everyone to dinner, and seems to be calling off the party.
A Poor Showing Would Make Sotnikova's Medal Look Like a Fluke

Sotnikova's Olympic gold medal already looks like garish anomaly if you compare that result to the rest of her short career. The only thing she's been able to consistently win are the Russian National Championships. And international rules don't recognize scores at national championship competitions because they're inflated. She has no Grand Prix wins or World Championship medals in the three years she's been competing on the senior level.
Going into the World Championships, it's not that far out of reach to think that she might be left off the podium. Mao Asada, the 2010 silver medalist who turned in a stunning Olympic free skate, along with her domestic rivals, Kanako Murakami and Akiko Suzuki, will be skating on home ice and enjoying a similar advantage Sotnikova had at the Olympics. Carolina Kostner, the 2014 Olympic bronze medalist, is putting together some of the best skating of her life. Americans Gracie Gold (who is improving with each competition) and Ashley Wagner are hungry and could threaten for medals too.
And the turnaround is tough too. Kim Yu-na won the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver and only got the silver medal in the World Championships that year. "It is very difficult for athletes to compete in what is usually the biggest event of the year just weeks after the biggest event of their lives. They often appear to be suffering from mono or in dire need of hibernation," Lease said. "A Red Bull isn’t going to cut it at that point."
It's not hard to imagine Sotnikova being left in the cold without a World Championship medal. That would put her in rare, perhaps embarrassing company with the likes of Sarah Hughes, who didn't even win the U.S. national championships and placed sixth at the 2003 World Championships after her 2002 Olympic medal.
Sotnikova's Super Scores Might Be in Doubt
Whether it's a World Championship or some dinky competition in the middle of nowhere, Sotnikova's scores at her next competition will be scrutinized. If you recall, she and her Russian compatriot Yulia Lipnitskaya received plenty of +3 GOEs (marks of perfection) from judges in Sochi while the rest of the top women were scored with +1s and +2s. In fact, Lipnitskaya messed up twice and still received more +3s than any other woman in the competition not named Sotnikova.
And Sotnikova's scores in Sochi were 20 points better than the best in her life. At the Olympics, she received 149.95 points for her free skate. The highest score Sotnikova had previously scored with that same routine in recognized international competition was at the European Championships in January. There she got a 131.63 — around 18 points less than Sochi.
People will be wanting to see if 1) Sotnikova can skate at a high level again and 2) if judges will reward her similarly to Sochi. If Sotnikova turns in a sloppy performance, she'll look like she got lucky. If she turns in a good performance and doesn't receive the same scores, then her medal becomes more questionable.
The World Championships begin on March 24. Since she's listed as a substitute, there's still a slim chance we could see Sotnikova skate (like an injury, or if Sotnikova changes her mind). Mirai Nagasu is listed as the U.S.'s substitute and wasn't named to our World Championship team.

Since Adelina Sotnikova's controversial gold medal figure skating win in the Sochi Olympics, the International Skating Union has said it was "confident in the high quality and integrity of the ISU judging system." The group's actions, like removing its contact information page on its website and deleting posts on its Facebook page, say it doesn't want to hear otherwise.
Sotnikova's victory over South Korea's Kim Yuna and Italy's Carolina Kostner left many in the skating world scratching their heads. There are fishy details like the overabundance of generous scores for Sotnikova and her Russian compatriot, Julia Lipnitskaya, and stinginess when it came to the other top four women, or the fact that one judge severely underscored Kim on her artistry and possibly the same judge consistently over-scored (compared to the other judges) Sotnikova's program. And that one of the judges is married to the head of the Russian skating federation, and another, a Ukrainian with reported ties to Moscow, was busted for trying to fix a figure skating competition in the 1998 Nagano Olympics.
That said, there are a lot of questions people have about the result, conflicts of interest, and the judging system. There's a 2 million-strong online petition floating around asking the International Skating Union to investigate and thoroughly explain the results. And there are countless tweets, tumblrs, Facebook pages, Reddit threads, figure skating forum threads, and whatnot with people wanting answers from the ISU.
The problem is, it's really hard for them to get in touch with the International Skating Union — and the ISU made it that way. One of its first moves was eliminating its e-mail contact form from its website. Here's a snapshot of their website from February 14, a little under a week before the women's competition:

It had a contact page which would direct you to a form which allowed you to send an e-mail to the ISU. That's completely disappeared now:

Granted, that's a small tweak, but there's been no explanation as to why it's removed the link. It's also taken down that page.
The ISU has also been doing some housekeeping on its Facebook page. After Sotnikova's win, the page was flooded with comments about how the judging was skewed or unfair. And some of those comments reportedly crossed the line,prompting the ISU to post this message: "Anyone is welcome to comment on this page but please do so in a respectful manner. Any discriminating and foul language or reference to foul language will be deleted."
What users are now saying is that the ISU is blocking users and deleting posts that are just sharp criticisms:

The ISU's actions (is someone getting paid to delete those comments?) seem a little odd for an organization that is fully confident in its abilities and current judging system. The organization hasn't spoken since voicing its support for the judges and the judging system.
The other half of that equation is that there are a lot of people upset with the result. We sort of knew about the magnitude of displeasure when we heard about that online petition, but the ISU's actions could possibly reflect that it was being deluged with comments and e-mails about the current system — something it shouldn't be ignoring.
I tried contacting the ISU by phone, and have sent an email asking about the website tweaks, the Facebook deletions, whether or not it had to do with Sotnikova's gold medal. I will update if I hear back.

Since the minute Adelina Sotnikova won her Olympic figure skating gold medal last week, a growing chorus of people, including skating legends like Kurt Browning and Katarina Witt, have questioned Sotnikova's scores and alleged that her historic win was due to Russian rigging. What isn't going to help Sotnikova's gold-medal legacy are the new images of her hugging one of the people responsible for her score, an analysis at how her fellow Russian Julia Lipnitskaya was generously scored, and the questions about whether mistakes on her jumps were overlooked.
Last week, we touched upon why people thought Sotnikova's win was fixed: 1) she made a visible mistake where the other two gold-medal contenders did not; 2) a judge married to the director of the Russian Figure Skating Federation was in charge of scoring her program; and 3) the Olympics had been very generous to other Russian skaters. More than 2 million people signed an unofficial online petition for the International Skating Union to investigate the results.
Now, a new set of uncomfortable facts and allegations has cropped up over the weekend. Here's a guide:
Sotnikova Was Hugging One of Her Judges
One image making the viral rounds this weekend was reportedly of a judge named Alla Shekhovtseva — the wife of Valentin Piseev, the longtime president and general director of the Russian Skating Federation — hugging Sotnikova after the competition:

This, of course, isn't proof of cheating. But it doesn't look good for the sport. It'd be akin to a college basketball referee hugging a player after a game-winning free throw that the referee called.
And the ISU sorta recognizes this, and it's mentioned in their code of ethics. I say sorta, because the way the rules are written, it's very vague. The code of ethics only has one clause that tells someone not to favor or reward people (coaches, skaters, managers, etc.) from their home country. And the organization's 2012 constitution has an entire section on the conflict of interest and what people with conflicts of interest should and should not be doing in competitions. But most of its language revolves around the word "family" or "family member" and the definition of those terms are very vague:
The term ”family” as used in this Rule shall be understood as including all persons who, due to their relationships, may reasonably appear to be in a conflict of interest position regarding a competing Skater, ineligible person or remunerated Coach.
Would a person with marital ties to the Russian Skating Federation, which Sotnikova is a part of, be considered family? And the conflict of interest specter isn't just haunting Sotnikova's relationship with Shekhovtseva. If Sotnikova's success brings more money to the Russian Skating Federation, isn't that just as problematic? Couldn't Shekhovtseva be seen as helping her husband's organization?
Without Falls, Julia Lipnitskaya's Technical Scores Would Have Beaten Kim's and Kostner's
The theme surrounding figure skating in the Sochi Olympic games is that being Russian helps your score. Going into the ladies competition, all eyes were on 15-year-old Julia Lipnitskaya. For a while there, Lipnitskaya was the Russian to look out for after dazzling in the team competition. And there was talk of how her scores received a boost.
During the course of the ladies competition, Lipnitskaya turned in two bumbly skates peppered with falls, effectively taking herself out of medal contention. Though, had she hit her jumps in the free skate, she probably could have finished fourth with a higher technical score higher than Kim Yuna and Carolina Kostner. A lot of that is how the judges graded her elements versus how they graded the other women.
The first thing you'll notice when you look at Lipnitskaya's scoresheet is a high number of +3 Grades of Execution. As we've come to know, +3 GOE means elements, like jumps and spins, were done to perfection. Here's Lipnitskaya's scorecard:

If you count up all those 3s she received, there are 27 of them peppered around her 12 components. Silver medalist Kim had 13:

And Japan's Mao Asada had six, as did American Gracie Gold, who finished in fourth place:
In short, Lipnitskaya had more +3s in her program than Kim and Kostner combined — the only woman of the night to see more 3s on her score card was Sotnikova. Dave Lease, from the Skating Lesson blog, told us that the random order represents the order of which the judges scores are presented.
And if add you add up all the 3s that were given among the first six women, there are 97 of them. Sotnikova (33) and Lipnitskaya account for 61 percent of them (60 3s). The remaining four women only account for 38 percent of the 3s (around 37 of them). Granted, the split shouldn't be equal among all the women, since we have winners and losers. And theoretically, Sotnikova should have the best scores since she finished first. But it is odd that the first place finisher and the sixth place finisher, who are both Russian, dominate in the amount of excellent marks.
Around month ago, judges at the European Championships did not think Lipnitskaya was as worthy of as many 3s:

There are elements Lipnitskaya does better than Kim and some women, like her spins (that Biellmann in particular). Her jumps, as analysts like Dick Button noted, aren't as impressive — they lack lift, and the amount of ice she covers isn't as impressive. Those facets are supposed to be considered in that GOE scoring.
Not unlike Sotnikova, there was one judge who was very happy doling out 3s, and went against the grain of the other judges. Here's Sotnikova's scoresheet as a quick reference:

Lipnitskaya, like Sotnikova, benefitted from one judge doling out a lot of 3s, who also went against the grain of the other judges:
You'll notice that her first element, a triple lutz-triple toe combination, received 0s from a couple judges on the panel. Yet the judge in the fifth column had it down as exceptional. That judge felt the same about her next combination.
The judge in the ninth column also doled out plenty of 3s, including grading Lipnitskaya's first jumping pass as exceptional. The number of 3s those two judges threw out in Lipnitskaya's is 11 — two less than all the 3s in Kim's routine.
Why were judges so stingy to these exceptional scores when it came to other female skaters, but not so in Lipnitskaya's and Sotnikova's programs? Was Lipnitskaya really that much better in her elements, including some of her jumps, than Kim, Asada, and Kostner?
To a certain extent all these 3s are moot because Lipnitskaya took herself out of the running by falling. But had she not fallen, there would even be more controversy, because she could have likely finished second in the free skate behind Sotnikova.
All these 3s, 2s, and 1s symbolize the amount of bonus points that a judge wants to award a good skater. In skating, jumps have a base value and those -3 to +3s, correspond to a weighted bonus for each jump. For example, a triple lutz's base value is 6.0 points — you land it cleanly, that's what you should be getting. A triple lutz done with a +3 GOE grabs you 2.1 in bonus, bringing that value to 8.1 points. A triple lutz given a -3 GOE (a fall), becomes a lousy 3.9 points.
To determine that final GOE, a trimmed mean that throws out the highest and lowest scores from the nine judges is used. The remaining scores are averaged and rounded. Those GOE points are how you get from a starting value to the final panel score from the judges. Lipnitskaya's starting value — the base value of all her elements — was a 59.57, and her final score, with all of her GOE points, was around 7 points higher, a 66.28. That includes three negative elements.
This is where being stingy with those 3s can be felt. Lipnitskaya's total, 66.28, is only around 3 points behind Kim's very clean routine, which received a 69.69. Kim's starting value was a tad lower at 57.49. And Lipnitskaya actually outscored Kim on their common element, a triple flip. Here is Kim's:

Kostner, who skated a clean routine, only gained about 10 points from her GOE, and Gold, who had one deduction (two less than Lipnitskaya), only got about 9 points in GOE.
If Lipnitskaya landed her triple loop and triple salchow, and only got the base amount of points (without any GOE on top), she would have received 3.34 and 2.1 more points. That would have bring her total to 71.72 points — a technical score higher than Kim and Kostner; around 1.31 points behind Asada's technical score (Asada landed a triple axel, the hardest jump for women); and around 12 points higher than her starting value. Had she landed those jumps very cleanly, it's not hard to imagine that Lipnitskaya's number would have been even higher.
Yes, this is hypothetical and didn't happen because Lipnitskaya fell. But it shows you how the table was being set. It's hard to imagine Kim and Kostner skating cleaner than they did. It's not so hard to imagine that Lipnitskaya could do better.
One of Kim's Artistry Scores Is Much Different Than the Others
While high scores peppered Lipnitskaya's and Sotnikova's routines, there was something equally fishy going on with Kim's scorecard:

The judge in the second column, consistently gave Kim the lowest artistry scores. In that second row, that judge is a full point away from the next lowest score, and almost the same can be said of the choreography scores that judge is handing out. These scores come in .25 increments, meaning this judge was four marks off the others in some places.
... And Sotnikova's Have Skyrocketed
In Sotnikova's component scores, nothing came close to that 7.75:

Again, skating is subjective. But the variance in scores between that judge and the others just makes it seem like one judge is watching a completely different performance. What makes it stranger is that at the European Championships in January, Sotnikova's artistic scores were almost a full point lower than her Olympic scores. Notice her interpretation scores, which topped out at a 9.25.

Up to Four Judges Were Allegedly In on It
Because of skating's trimmed mean measures, it'd be hard for one judge to shift the scores. He or she would almost always see her scores thrown out. But, two judges in on it together could affect that trimmed mean. That's one of the reasons that people aren't perturbed by Shekhovtseva's place on the panel.
What critics are concerned about is Yuri Balkov. Balkov, a Ukranian man, was suspended for trying to fix the 1998 Nagano Olympic Games. And he reportedly has ties to Moscow. His presence on the panel means there's someone on there that has a history of attempting to influence votes. And that's someone you don't want in close to proximity to other judges.
If he and Shekhovtseva were working together, they could ensure that one of their set of scores would factor into the result.
But according to an unnamed high-ranking official, it was more than Balkov and Shekhovtseva. "This is what they can do," the official told USA Today over the weekend, insinuating that Russia, Ukraine, Estonia, and Slovakia may have been working together to inflate Sotnikova's scores. Four judges would be more than enough to swing and game the trimmed mean.
According to that same official, the man in charge of the ladies' free skate technical panel is also problematic. That man is Alexander Lakernik, vice president of the Russian skating federation. And he was in charge of calling and making sure that the skaters are performing the correct jumps and are completing the right amount of revolutions. He has no outright effect on Sotnikova's scores (he doesn't hand out any marks), but he is in control of making sure she isn't cheating her jumps.
The "Flutz"
There is a theory that Sotnikova "flutzed" her first jumping pass. That is, there's an allegation she performed a triple flip instead of a triple lutz — it's a hard-to-catch mistake where a skater takes off from the wrong edge. That's slow motion, and not really a good angle to tell (it's the only replay we have). It would be easier if Sotnikova's back was turned to us. For a right-hander, a lutz would be mean the entry/pressure of the of the jump would come from the outside of the left foot (what makes the jump difficult is staying on that outside edge). *In comparison, here's Kim's triple lutz with a better angle of her edge/foot positioning:

There's also another theory floating around, that Sotnikova may have under-rotated the back end of that jumping combination. Under-rotation happens when a skater is still rotating when they finish their jump. One of the signs is that a skater's foot rotates when it hits the ice. Again, this is the best (and only) replay we have of Sotnikova's jump:

Under-rotated jumps, like flutzes, should result in deductions. And if Sotnikova did flutz or under-rotate her jump, then she was given too many points. The angles we have aren't the best, but that toe loop looks like her skate rotates while it's making contact with the ice. But keeping these jumps honest isn't my job, and I have only one angle to work with.
Making sure skaters aren't cheating their jumps is Lakernik's job. He and his team of judges (one of whom reportedly hugged members of the Russian delegation after the competition) have access to zooms, angles, and slow-motion replays of all these skaters' jumps and are tasked with keeping their jumps honest.
Further, it's not like Lakernik and his team weren't calling edges and under-rotations. They called a few on Mao Asada (scroll up and look for the "e" and "<" symbols on her score sheet).
"That completes the whole picture," the official said.
Despite these protests, an online petition with over 2 million signatures and counting, and anomalies like Lipnitskaya's surplus of 3s and the other women's lack of them, the ISU says they have full faith in the judging. "The ISU has not received any official protest with regard to the Ladies’ Free Skating event or any other event held during the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games and is confident in the high quality and integrity of the ISU judging system," the organization said in a statement.

"If Adelina was not from Russia, she would never get those marks," Dave Lease, America's figure skating expert boyfriend, told The Wire on Thursday night. Lease is one of the brilliant minds behind The Skating Lesson, a blog focused on the intricacies and nuances of figure skating disciplines and competitions.
Naomi Nari Nam, the 1999 silver medalist at the U.S. national championships, watched the competition and came away with feelings similar to Lease's. She says that she felt like Kim, not Sotnikova, was her pick to win gold. "I definitely think it was home court advantage [for Sotnikova]," she told The Wire. "It was very inflated."
Nam and Lease aren't the only ones upset with Sotnikova's win. In fact, now would be a good time to check on the whole nation of South Korea and whether or not it has plunged into lawlessness after Kim's loss. Skating coaches, choreographers, and even current competitors, like Ashley Wagner, have all voiced their negative opinion on Thursday's scoring.
So what exactly upsets them about Sotnikova's win?
The Mistake
In the old days, before the current scoring system was in place, a fall would knock pretty much any skater out of medal contention. Judges would have a hard time justifying putting someone who bungled a jump ahead of someone who skated cleanly. (Take the 1998 competition in Nagano, when Michelle Kwan narrowly lost to Tara Lipinski, as an example.) On Thursday, however, Sotnikova was the only skater in the top three who had an ugly error — she stepped out of this jumping combination:
Judges penalized Sotnikova 0.90 in her Grade of Execution points for that sloppy, crooked sequence. Kim and Kostner's programs did not have any elements which came close to stepping out of the jump's landing. For example, here is Kim's slightly less difficult (but exponentially cleaner) double axel, double toe, double loop:
Sotnikova actually completed one more triple jump than Kim. (Kostner had seven triple jumps, the same as Sotnikova, but finished far behind her.) But Lease, who isn't really a Kim fan, believes that there are "other aspects of Yu-na's skating that should carry more weight. They certainly would have at last year's world championships."
Sotnikova's Choreography
Purists and long-time fans of the sport understand choreography and artistry are not Sotnikova's strong points. Longtime analyst and skating legend Dick Button weighed in:

Lease was not a fan of the choreography either, and made sure to point out that Sotnikova's routine included a sequence where Adelina pantomimes rope-pulling or tug-o-war, and a spiral sequence where she waves to the crowd — a move you might see a trainer perform on a sea mammal. Most of the skating world,Button included, will also agree that Kostner has some of the best choreography of the top skaters.
Sotnikova's wave
While her jumps may not be as strong as Sotnikova's or Kim's, the shapes and lines Kostner creates on the ice are spell-binding. But the judges actually gave Sotnikova higher marks in her choreography than they did Kostner. Here is Sotnikova's score sheet:

Sotnikova outscored Kostner and many others, including 2010 silver medalist Mao Asada, on choreography, and tied her with execution. "Carolina Kostner was interpreting the rhythm of 'Bolero' and there was someone pulling an imaginary rope and waving during her spiral sequence," Lease said, explaining to me that Sotnikova's component score offended his sensibilities more than anything else that happened on Thursday night.
The Judges' Panel Included the Russian Skating Federation President's Wife
Scoring comes from the judges and a judges panel. They're in charge of the Grade of Execution scores and those component scores. GOE scores (which are graded on a -3 to +3 range) are weighted values that reward skaters who do elements beautifully and punish them when they do those elements poorly. Often times, these GOE points determine winners and losers.
The nine judges are picked from a pool of 13. And yesterday, judges from South Korea (Kim's home country), U.S., Great Britain, and Sweden were swapped out for the free skate because they had already worked the short program.
One of the Olympic judges who took their place was Alla Shekhovtseva, the wife ofValentin Piseev, the longtime president and general director of the Russian Skating Federation. Yes, a judge on the panel that determines whether or not a Russian was going to win a gold medal at a competition held in Russia is married to a man in charge of the Russian Skating Federation.
Also on the panel is a Ukrainian man named Yuri Balkov. Balkov was suspended from judging for a year after trying to fix the Nagano ice dancing competition and reportedly has ties to Moscow. "The two other new long program judges were from Estonia and France, which was the country that conspired with Russia to try to fix the pairs and ice dancing competition at the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City,"USA Today reports.
If you look at Sotnikova's score sheet, there are a couple of judges who really liked her jumps and elements more than the others. Her first jump, a triple lutz-triple toe loop combination, actually got a -1 GOE from one judge — meaning that it was performed slightly below average. One judge gave it a zero, and a two more gave it a +1, meaning those judges saw the jump as pretty basic or maybe a tad above average.
But there was one outlier who gave Sotnikova a +3, meaning that it was up there with the best the jump or element could be done. In fact, according to that judge, almost all of Sotnikova's elements — her spins, her jumps, and footwork — were some of the best he or she has ever seen. You'll also notice the judge who gave her the 3s was also one of the kinder ones when it came to penalizing Sotnikova's sloppy step out. (It was only knocked down to a -1.) The judge in the second column was also pretty kind and generous with his or her 2s and 3s, as is the one in the fifth column. But none come close to the judge whose numbers are circled.
When determining those GOEs, the highest and lowest scores are thrown out, a measure enacted to stop people from gaming the system. But you can see how throwing an extra three out almost every single time ensures that Sotnikova won't be hurt in the overall scores, and ensures that Sotnikova has a 3 in 10 of her 12 elements. All those 3s could also protect other 3s that judges may have given out.
Here is Kim's scoresheet, where one judge flooded her scores with 1s and no 3s, increasing the likelihood that a +1 (the lowest amounts of positive GOE points possible) will factor into Kim's scores. The judge in the fourth column also was happy giving out plenty of 1s.
Those judges were also in charge of Sotnikova's component (artistry) score, which outscored Kostner. Again, there were a couple of judges who really, really liked Sotnikova's program:
While we know judges' identities, how a specific judge scored is kept secret. Lease explained that the International Skating Union believes that anonymity takes pressure away from judges. "What it really does is hide who the crooks are," he said.
When asked about whether or not he could tell which scores Balkov and Shekhovtseva put down, Lease had an answer. "I believe they're the ones most impressed by the imaginary rope pulling."
Nam echoed Lease's sentiment about the system. She explained that the scoring can be so egregious that anonymity is just a formality. "It's not really not anonymous. You know the judges. You can tell by their last names which ones are Russian. You see the scores," she said.
Sotnikova's Free Skate Improved by 20 Points and Was Almost a Record
Not only do Sotnikova's scores look like an anomaly compared to her peers, they put Sotnikova's performance up there with some of the very best scores in history.
The highest-scoring free skate in the eight years since the judging system changed to this GOE system has been Kim Yu-na's gold medal-winning long program at the Vancouver Olympics. There, Kim scored a 150.06 in a flawless routine:

Sotnikova scored as close as anyone's come to that free skate with 149.95 on Thursday. The highest score she had previously scored with that same routine in international competition was at the European Championships in January. There she scored a 131.63 — around 18.32 points less than she scored on Thursday. It should be said that Sotnikova has had trouble putting together clean free skates, and that Thursday's skate might have been the cleanest skate of her life.
Still, people don't believe that Sotnikova is around 18 points better than she was three weeks ago. "It (Sotnikova's free skate score) was very inflated," Nam said.
Lease joked that the arena was the same arena where the Russian National Championships were held and that the judges from that competition just camped out in the arena. "There's no way to justify Sotnikova's marks," he said.
With a score that high, judges are essentially saying that Sotnikova's free skate (even with the error) is better than all her previous performances that came before it. And it also sends a message that without the error, Sotnikova's 2014 Olympic free skate was the best in history.
The Olympics Have Been Very Kind to Russian Skaters
"I don't know if you saw the team event, but being Russian seems to count for a lot," Lease told me.
Russians medaled at every figure skating event they entered. The only one they didn't medal in was in the men's figure skating event, which Evgeni Plushenko pulled out of at the last minute. But there have been question marks about how they're being graded. The first example comes from the pairs competition, when Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov were given positive Grade of Execution (GOE) points for a thrown jump, even though Volosozhar's hand touched the ice:
As we've mentioned, positive GOE points are only supposed to be given when judges feel like a jump was well (the higher the GOE score, the more exceptional the element was). Touching your hand on the ice is a mistake This pairs team wasn't the only one to benefit from some kind scoring.
Lease told us that ladies figure skater Julia Lipnitskaya has been scored generously too. "Her marks have risen faster than inflation during the 1920s," Lease told us prior to the free skate.
Outside of Russia and prior to the Olympics, Sotnikova's personal best combined score has barely broken 200 points — a 202.36 she scored at this year's European championships. Yet, she scored 224.59 in Sochi, signaling that judges believe she was 22 points better than she was last month.
The unavoidable question then becomes: why watch skating at all if there's all this corruption and alleged manipulation? What is this sport worth if the stakes and standards seem to shift with each competition?
"We watch figure skating for the drama, for the artistry, and for the scandal. You have to kind of embrace it. We do have a discipline called ice-dancing," Lease said. "This is why other sports consider figure skating laughable. Every single skater knows that there's potential for [Sotnikova's allegedly inflated scores] to happen," Lease added.
Skating's flippant and unpredictable nature worked out for Sotnikova this time, as she came away with gold despite Kostner and Kim skating more beautifully —subjectively speaking of course.

새롭게 자리에 든 심판 중 한 명 알라 세코프세바는 오랫동안 러시아 피겨 스케이팅 연합의 회장이자 총괄 이사인 발렌틴 피시브의 부인이다. 그렇다, 러시아에서 열리는 이 경기에서, 러시아인이 금메달을 딸 수 있을지 결정하는 패널 중 한 사람이, 러시아 스케이팅연맹 총괄이사의 부인이었던 것이다.

이것은 김연아의 점수표이다. 한 명의 심판은 3점은 주지않고 1점을 퍼부음으로써 (가장 낮은 가산점인) 1점이 김연아의 점수로 계산될 가능성을 높이는 것을 볼 수 있다. 네 번째 줄의 심판 역시 마음껏 1점들을 쏟아낸 것을 볼 수 있다.
심판들이 매긴 소트니코바의 구성(예술) 점수는 코스트너의 구성 점수를 뛰어넘었다. 다시 한 번 말하지만, 몇 명의 심판들은 소트니코바의 프로그램이 매우, 매우 마음에 들었나보다.
