The good, bad and ugly of figure skating in 2014

Adelina steals the gold and the outcry that followed

The ladies field at the Olympics was chock-full of talented skaters. Many expected Olympic Champion, Yuna Kim to take home the gold, yet it was Adelina Sotnikova who crept in and stole the win. Though many remember her free skate, it was the controversy that followed that will probably be most remembered. Accusations of fixed judging came flying and petitions were plenty. There was an outburst from fans and skaters alike concerning the scoring of the IJS and the anonymous manner in which it is done. Time has now gone by and still no real changes have been made despite the outcry.

Lipnitskaïa a encore chuté

Quel simulacre !

Skating union thumbs nose at the world by keeping judging secret

They did it again. In the face of virtually unanimous opposition to anonymous judging throughout the world of figure skating, the International Skating Union (ISU) today reaffirmed its commitment to this highly-criticized practice. During its congress in Dublin, Ireland, the ISU voted down proposals to abolish secret judging — a severe blow to a sport fighting for its survival and already mired in controversy.

Less than four months ago at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, the sport was rocked by a scandal involving the ladies’ results and the composition of the judging panel, which seemed to favor the Russian winner, Adelina Sotnkiova, over former Olympic Champion Yuna Kim. The South Korean Olympic Committee filed a complaint with the ISU, which the skating union immediately dismissed.

Yet one of the two proposals to eliminate secret judging came from none other than the Russian federation itself. "Deletion of anonymity will make the ISU Judging System more transparent and will increase the accountability of the Judges," the Russian proposal states.

The United States introduced a similar proposal, which would have required the marks of each judge to be identified.

Even with two of the greatest skating powers in the world requesting the abolishment of something so clearly harmful for the sport, the effort had no chance to succeed. The wishes of ISU President Ottavio Cinquanta, quite clearly, have to prevail.

The speed skater who has turned figure skating on its head during his long and highly-controversial reign, has made few friends in the sport. In fact, he is currently serving what would have been an illegal term due to his age, had the ISU not temporarily changed the rules in 2012 to allow him to stay in office an additional two years without reelection.

Dick Button, arguably the best known personality in figure skating, best expressed what most others feel in a column in Newsweek magazine back in March. “Nowhere are foxes put in charge of the henhouse—nowhere, that is, except in skating. For more than a decade, the [ISU] has been presiding over the decline of figure skating: television ratings, television coverage and overall popularity are all down. How does the ISU respond? For almost 40 years, it has been run by speed skaters. The current president frankly admits, ‘I am a speed skater. I know nothing about figure skating.’ He can’t even whistle as the ship sinks."

Button was also among the signatories and supporters of a petition asking Cinquanta to resign. As of today, the petition has been signed by 34,000 people worldwide.

Judging secrecy is new to skating

The inherent subjectivity of figure skating makes transparency of judging more important to this sport than any other. Even gymnastics, which begs some comparison to skating, does not need to strike such a fine balance between its technical and artistic sides. Skating is unique among sports with its appeal as a performing art. As a result, controversy is inevitable and the need for accountability of judging crucial in order to maintain as much as a semblance of objectivity. Yet with anonymous judging now firmly in place, ambiguity and perplexity rule.

After the end of the ladies’ competition in Sochi this year, Katarina Witt, the two time Olympic champion and now TV commentator, shook her head in disbelief: “I am stunned by this result. I don't understand the scoring."

And U.S. Olympian and former national champion Ashley Wagner says it plain and simple. “We need to get rid of the anonymous judging.”

Judging by the recent controversy, one might think secret judging is the norm in figure skating. Not so. Until Cinquanta dismantled the century-old 6.0 system, judging was a model of transparency, even if not always of objectivity. Cinquanta’s radical change in judging systems happened in response to the pairs judging scandal of 2002, when judging collusion was exposed at the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. How ironic that under the excuse of cleaning up the sport, Cinquanta made it easier for judges to cheat than ever before.

Under the 6.0 system, every judge’s mark was posted, along with his or her country. (Before digital technology, judges actually used to hold up the marks in their hands for the world to see.) That invariably led to occasional booing from the audience, which the judges no doubt did not appreciate. But most of the time it kept them at least marginally honest. There is only so much cheating you can do when 20,000 people (who once used to actually fill these arenas) stare down at you. Knowledgeable fans knew exactly what mark the blond lady in the brown fur coat from Bulgaria had given each skater.

Today, no one has a clue who gives what mark to whom — not the person, nor the country. In fact, even the ISU doesn't know, because the computer throws out the high and the low mark on each element so that no one ever knows whose marks went into the grand total. As a result, no judge is ever responsible for any outcome, however egregious.

"The outrageous judging system [Cinquanta] enacted was put in place to stop the corruption,” said Tim Wood, a one-time world champion and member of the U.S Skating Hall of Fame. “But the judges are now not disclosed, so it has increased the corruption to unprecedented levels, as evidenced by the issues of the Sochi women's event.”

If Cinquanta was able to undo a century-old judging system that produced the greatest stars in the history of the sport merely because of one controversy, why can the ISU not revert to transparent judging after many other controversies, as well as requests from federations, skating insiders, and the media from around the world? The answer is painfully obvious. Because nothing can get past Cinquanta and his minions.

The ISU has become a despotic, unaccountable organization with no credibility to speak of, and led most of the time by speed skaters in spite of the fact that its funding comes overwhelmingly from figure skating. The net result of the Cinquanta revolution of the past 20 years: skating popularity is at lowest point in history, especially in Europe and in the U.S., where networks are unable to even get contracts to air the World Figure Skating Championships on television. The professional skating scene has disappeared, and a few isolated skating shows are barely hanging on with greatly reduced audiences. Skating has remained popular mostly in Asia, thanks to very popular champions such as South Korea’s Yuna Kim and Japan’s Mao Asada. once they retire, however, revenues to the sport are expected to crash even in Asia.

"If changes are not sweeping and imminently forthcoming, the sport could find itself obsolete and irrelevant," Wood concluded.

INTERVIEW-Figure Skating-ISU president must quit before sport dies

May 6 (Reuters) - International Skating Union president Ottavio Cinquanta has left figure skating at its lowest ebb and must stand down from his role immediately before the sport becomes irrelevant, former double world champion Tim Wood told Reuters.

The American is part of a petition that has gained over 22,000 signatures demanding the former Italian speed skater quit the position he has held since 1994 before he damages it further with more planned changes in his final two years.

Wood, who also won a silver medal at the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble, said Cinquanta has undemocratically postponed ISU elections in order to extend his stay in the position and changed the scoring system for the worse by making it confusing for the public and open to corruption.

"If changes are not sweeping and imminently forthcoming, the sport could find itself obsolete and irrelevant," Wood told Reuters this week.

"That is the imminent danger and the first person that needs to be replaced is the guy who has caused all the problems, the guy who has zero understanding of the sport, as he freely admits, and the guy who is completely responsible for the single handed dismantling of the sport... Cinquanta."

The Italian's stint in charge was due to end in June but he and his board postponed elections two years ago until 2016 which has allowed the 75-year-old to continue in office despite reaching the maximum age limit.

The ISU did not respond to requests for comment from Reuters.

Cinquanta has grand plans for his final years in power, aiming to end short programmes in all figure skating events and simplify a scoring system that he changed in the wake of the 2002 Olympic judging scandal at the Salt Lake City Games.

Wood had little faith, though, and believes the old 6.0 system that was popular with fans should be reinstated.

"The outrageous judging system he enacted was put in place to stop the corruption but because judges are now not disclosed so it has increased the corruption to unprecedented levels, as evidenced by the issues of Sochi women's event," said Wood, a member of the U.S skating hall of fame.

ARROGANCE

Figure skating made a swath of negative headlines at the Sochi Olympics in February when Russia's Adelina Sotnikova took a shock gold in the women's event which drew derision outside of the host nation.

The teenager was the only one of the leading trio whose free programme contained an obvious mistake - a two-footed landing from a double loop - but the nine-member judging panel declared her a winner with a personal best score just shy of defending champion Kim Yuna's world record.

Two million people have since signed a petition demanding an inquiry but Cinquanta has failed to deliver leaving Wood pessimistic about the chances of his demands being heard.

"Talk about arrogance and lack of transparency," he said of the Italian's silence.

"The judging system is so complicated and so corrupt that the viewing public has no idea of what's going on."

Thirty years after Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean captivated a global audience with their performance to Ravel's Bolero - an ice dance that earned them a row of perfect 6.0s and a prolonged standing ovation at the Sarajevo Olympics - the sport has lost a lot of its appeal, especially in North America.

Many skaters now seem to be jumping off the same production line, sacrificing artistry while trying to cram their routines with acrobatic tricks that earn them more points under the accumulative scoring system.

Wood pointed out that this has led to a loss in key television revenue streams, and helped the boom of reality shows such as 'Dancing with the Stars' and 'So you think you can dance'.

"Since Cinquanta was a speed skater, he doesn't like or understand the subjective elements of the creative artistic side of the sport, so the rules were changed to make everything a point system," the 65-year-old Wood said.

"The unintended consequence is that skaters are now just point junkies; whomever does the most tricks, wins.

"The general public tastes and preferences have shifted away from figure skating to the TV world of dance. This move by the public not only depletes revenues but the public has become sophisticated and knowledgeable about movement and creativity.

"Over 40 million people watch those shows. Now they go back and look at figure skating which is pre embryonic in its understanding and knowledge of movement in comparison." (Reporting by Patrick Johnston, editing by Pritha Sarkar)

우드는 이런 행태가 텔레비전 중계에 의한 수익 창출을 막아버렸고, ‘Dancing with the Stars (댄싱 위드 스타)' 혹은 'So you think you can dance'와 같은 리얼리티 댄스 프로그램의 붐을 부추겼다고 전했다.

Aw, ref! 5 Worst refereeing calls of all time(세상에, 심판!

In the history of sports, bad calls in important games live on in infamy on the Internet, where every play from every angle can be viewed again and again, and debated over until blue in the face.

Here are five of the worst.

The Chicago Bulls vs Utah Jazz – NBA Finals Series 1998

Forget Michael Jordan’s basketball return in 2001 to the Washington Wizards. Real NBA fans count his jump shot over Bryon Russell to be his last professional shot. With six seconds left on the clock and Jordan at the top of the three point line, he drives to the right, clearly pushes and fouls Bryon Russell, Utah’s best defender, away to give himself space then jumps and shoots. The Chicago Bulls won the game 87-86 and the series, delivering MJ his sixth and final crown.

Roy Jones Jr vs Park Si Hun – Gold medal match in boxing 1988 Olympics

When it comes to boxing, images of Don King with his electrified hair and shady dealings normally come to mind. But in this case it was the amateur Olympics. Having landed 54 more punches (86 to 32), and clearly being the aggressor, the future American heavyweight champion still lost, and was awarded silver. The three judges unanimously gave it to the South Korean, but later resigned their roles.

The Korean, embarrassed by his victory, apologised to Jones.

North QLD Cowboys v Cronulla Sharks – NRL Finals 2013

In one of the crucial matches of the 2013 season, an elimination final between the Cronulla Sharks and North Queensland Cowboys, referees Matt Cecchin and Henry Peranara counted tackles incorrectly, allowing Beau Ryan to score in the eighth minute on a seventh tackle. Only six are allowed in a rugby league set.

The Sharks went on to win 20-18.

During the heated post match press conference, Cowboys coach Neil Henry was rightfully angry, going so far as to claim conspiracy, so the rugby league final would be held in Sydney.

Both referees were dropped immediately after the match.

Gold medal round – Women’s figure skating Winter Olympics Sochi 2014

Controversy involving the Sochi games was mostly off the rink, as the world watched with alarm as Ukrainian protestors were killed in anti Russian protests.

On the rink, controversy skated circles around the gold medal round of the women’s figure skating.

The Korean red hot favourite Kim Yu na was awarded silver, despite a mistake free final performance.

Her main rival Russia’s Adelina Sotnikova made a mistake when she two footed a combination jump. She went on to win gold, in a performance seen live in the rink by Russian president Vladimir Putin.

The 17 year old Russian’s total score was 18 points higher than her previous best, which she scored a month before Sochi.

While technically not a refereeing blunder, scoring in skating has been mired in controversy. Scores are awarded anonymously by countries, whose judges often have conflicts of interest. Judges for the gold medal round, included Ukrainian Yuri Balkov who was suspended for a year when caught on tape trying to fix the 1998 Olympic ice dancing competition. Another  judge, Alla Shekhovtseva was the wife of Valentin Piseev, the general director of the Russian skating federation

USA vs the USSR – Gold medal basketball game 1972

The final few minutes of the game, in Munich, against the backdrop of the cold war, were a comedy of errors, some argue were deliberate. With less than ten seconds to play and down 49 to 48, US guard Doug Collins shot two free throws to put the US up by one. The buzzer signalling the end of the match blew during Collins’s free throws, and so the US understandably started celebrating.

What followed were umpire decisions which added more time not once, but twice, both of three seconds. On the second chance the Russians scored the winning basket and won 50 to 49.

It was the first time the Americans had lost an Olympic match, and so incensed were they by the decision, they did not attend the medal ceremony.

Joubert doesn’t understand what’s going on in figure skating as well as many others

World Figure Skating

Written by editorial staff, Translated by Golden Yuna

French figure skater Brian Joubert, who is participating these days at the Alexei Mishin’s ice show, said that he does not understand what’s going on in the present figure skating.

“I think that after the short program (at Sochi Olympics) I could be in the top three and my free skating was also not bad,” Joubert told Sportox.ru “I just do not understand everything that is going on in present figure skating. “ he continued.

“Yuzuru Hanyu is a good skater as well as Patrick Chan but they made so many mistakes … And despite this, they got very high marks. I really do not understand what’s going on, like many other people, especially in France. I feel such a great sadness for the future of our sport.” French skater confessed.

In the future, the famous skater is going to try his hand at the coaching field.

“I think in the future I will be a coach but it will not happen earlier than after few years.”

Many people understand Brian’s sadness and his desire to take a break before coaching career. Sochi Olympics left a lot more questions than answers. Joubert mentioned men’s single skating in Sochi but we have to note the main “highlight” of the Games – very controversial results in ladies skating, which caused a flurry of criticism to the ISU and IOC.

People, who devotedly loved figure skating for many years, are in the state of extreme pessimism. Initial anger and demand a fair investigation of results in the Olympic ladies event gradually were replaced by apathy.

And people are absolutely right! Millions from the figure skating community signed petitions of protest to ISU – no result; people directly appeal to the ISU leadership – no result; people ask questions on the official ISU Facebook page – no result. Instead of clear answers, people got ban for their questions and comments.

Such a policy of organization, which by its idea not only should but must be open and transparent, says that figure skating suffers quite strong disease. All this is reminiscent of an authoritarian country where all dissent is suppressed.

It is natural that when such organizations, in close cooperation with some local “friendly” skating federations, arranges another big “masquerade”, the interest in this sport is rapidly going downhill. Interesting fact – most athletes prefer to avoid criticism just because they do not want problems.

But when only fear supports the preservation of the current status quo and impedes the implementation of the necessary reforms, it is hardly to expect that figure skating will be perceived as a serious sport. It is more like a private VIP club with their dark rules that almost everyone knows, do not like, but continue to follow them anyway.

That’s why many fans stop attending the competitions (why go and pay a lot of money if all is decided in advance?), that is why parents now will think a hundred times before cheer their child for skating classes and finally, that is why so many journalists are losing interest in this sport . By the way, media creates up to 80% of a sport image. All this is very sad.

The news recently published in The Wire online edition added fuel to the fire. Recall that as it became known, the IOC printed fake quotes of Korean Yuna Kim praising Russia’s Adelina Sotnikova. The fabricated quotes appear on a story (without a byline) published on the official Olympic website, and refer to Kim as a gracious and accepting loser.

A screenshot from a Google cache version of the IOC website with a false quote

If you look at how the IOC article appears now, the quotes are gone. But there’s no correction or reference of an update. The quotes the IOC used were caught by Kim and her agent. “We confirmed IOC’s article. It’s not what Yuna Kim have said. We are working on it to handle this.” an official of Kim’s agency told the Chosun Ilbo news outlet. And Kim’s agency’s response and demand for the article to be changed has been catching fire in South Korea.

This story shows that the IOC is in very excellent relations with the ISU and do not hesitate to use even primitive means to promote the “results” of their mutual cooperation.

Several years ago in the world of football took place a scandal related with unfair choice of host countries for the FIFA World Cup. Thanks to the investigations, conducted by the British journalists with the assistance of official structures, dirty games became known and FIFA had to take action.

Recently, we all watched significant changes in the political life of Ukraine. The country got rid of the dictatorship. From the very beginning the country’s course was chosen to a full transparency, beginning with one main thing – in Ukrainian it calls Повне перезавантаження влади – a full “reboot” of all authority.

It is very possible that figure skating also needs something like that.

IOC fake quote

Photo: Alexandra Ilina

You Need To Catch Up On The Olympic Skating Scandal, Because It’s Getting Crazy

March 10, 2014

Crushable

Written by Alexis Rhiannon

The Olympics have been over for a couple weeks, but this Russian skating scandal refuses to go away, as now it’s being revealed that the International Olympic Committee made up quotes in which South Korean silver-medalist in the free skate Kim Yuna congratulates Russian gold-medalist Adelina Sotnikova. Never happened.

But to go back to the beginning — even the day after Sotnikova defeated Kim, there was pretty widespread indignation from people who felt like the competition had been rigged to give the Russian athletes an advantage. After all, Kim had a clean skate, while Sotnikova badly wobbled on two occasions, even putting down an extra foot to step out of a spin. But at that point, we didn’t think it would really turn into anything, let along a scandal big enough to rival Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan‘s because bottom line, you can’t argue with the scores. (Even when they’re quite obviously inflated, and the wife of the Russian Skating Federation’s president sits on the judging panel.)

But the more details that come out, the more it seems likely that there is something really shady going on. There are allegations that Sotnikova ‘flutzed’, which is when you begin a jump off the wrong edge of your skate, downgrading its difficulty and (in theory) your score. There’s the fact that if Yulia Lipnitskaya hadn’t fallen, her technical scores would have put her in second place on the podium, pushing Kim to third and Italy’s Carolina Kostner off altogether. There’s the fact that Sotnikova’s Olympic score was eighteen points higher than any score she’s ever gotten in her whole life, including at the European Championships, one month before. And there’s a bunch more intricate scoring stuff that I go into in great detail in this post.

And then there’s this new SNAFU, wherein people discovered that the IOC just went ahead and invented a gracious response from Kim after her shocking loss. According to a post on their site that’s now been edited — without any retraction or notation suggesting that a quote was removed — Kim made the following statement praising Sotnikova:

“She put on a great show. She’s a highly technical skater and was very difficult to beat tonight. I saw her in Innsbruck as part of my role as Games ambassador. We both battled for gold tonight, but she managed to come out on top.”

But according to her team, Kim never said that, or anything like it. Here’s the statement that an official of Kim’s agency issued when they noticed the quote:

“We confirmed IOC’s article. It’s not what Kim Yu-na have said. We are working on it to handle this.”

The quote was removed, but as I said, there has been no explanation of how the error was made, or who is responsible. In fact, there’s been no response from the IOC at all. They’re acting like the whole conflict has been resolved. But it definitely hasn’t, because as The Wire points out, the made up comment is in direct opposition to a statement about the Olympics that she delivered in her home country of South Korea:

“It was all very absurd but I was just happy that it was all finished. I have never gone over the result and thought what might have been.”

Well you’re the only one who hasn’t, apparently, because this is starting to smell fishy to a lot of other people on almost every level. Especially when you combine it with the fact that Sotnikova pulled out of the World Championships to be held later this month. On the one hand, it would have been the ideal time to prove that her medal wasn’t a fluke. But on the other, she’d have to skate under much ‘fairer’ circumstances, and any score inflation would become incredibly obvious in the cold late of day. As stated perfectly by The Wire:

“People will be wanting to see if 1) Sotnikova can skate at a high level again and 2) if judges will reward her similarly to Sochi. If Sotnikova turns in a sloppy performance, she’ll look like she got lucky. If she turns in a good performance and doesn’t receive the same scores, then her medal becomes more questionable.”

They’re still hoping that Sotnikova skates at the Championships on March, as she may yet do, and we can’t help but join them in that wish, even though it would probably create more questions than answers.

Sochi 2014: sempre piu dubbi sull’oro della Sotnikova (Foto e Video) (소치 2014: 소트니코바 금메달을 향한 점점 더 커지는 의혹)

OLIMPIAZZURRA

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cVW0h6U3D4

Pattinaggio di figura - Adelina Sotnikova giudici

Pattinaggio di figura - Adelina Sotnikova giudici 2

Pattinaggio di figura - voti giudici

Fixing Scandal Befalls Sochi Women's Figure Skating (소치 여자 피겨스케이팅에서 승부 조작이 일어나다)

The 2014 Women’s Figure Skating Competition for the Sochi Winter Olympics was held in the Iceberg Skating Palace where, as people all around the world already know, displeasure has been amplified even more with the results of the competition. Gold medal favorite, 23 year-old South Korean Yuna Kim, has been repeatedly reported to have been robbed of a gold medal by Russia’s own Adelina Sotnikova.

Sotnikova, 17, was originally behind Kim at the end of the short program, but came out on top after the free skate. Many believed that since Kim completed her program without any major blunders, she would ultimately come out on top. Sotnikova, however, surprised the world by winning gold even after almost falling during one of her programs.

Sotnikova, winning by a mere 5.48 points, was not even on the radar before entering the Olympics. Kim was already highly anticipated to be the top star with Russia’s 15 year-old wunderkind Julia Lipnitskaia being her biggest competitor. However, Lipnitskaia’s fall during her short program proved to be the fatal blow in her chances for a medal. She managed to place 5th after the short program, beating out American Ashley Wagner. Wagner, who placed 6th after the short program, is noted for speaking out against the ridiculousness that a skater who fell could somehow manage to be ranked higher than a skater with a clean program.

Aside from the judges being possibly too generous to Lipnitskaia, popular opinion is heavily focused on the surprising victory of Adelina Sotnikova. As South Korean outlets first reported, two of the judges who scored the ice skating events have possible conflicts of interest.

Alla Shekhovtseva, wife of the general director of the Figure Skating Federation of Russia, is one of the judges caught up in the storm of complaints stemming from the results. Footage from the event shows Shekhovtseva as being one of the first to congratulate Sotnikova. The two shared a warm embrace after Sotnikova’s program; their apparently close relationship has caused onlookers to cry foul.

Another judge causing the public to question the results is Ukraine’s Yury Balkov. During the 1998 Winter Olympics hosted in Nagano, Japan, Balkov was caught attempting to rig the ice skating competition. This led to him being suspended from the International Skating Union for a year. Viewers wonder whether both Shekhovtseva and Balkov should have been able to judge the competition, with Shekhovtseva’s conflict of interest and Balkov’s problematic history.

The judges, as well as the generous scoring of the home ladies, have caused many to wonder if the legitimacy and integrity of the Olympics is being upheld. In fact, there is currently a Change.org petition, with over 2 million signatures, asking the International Skating Union to investigate the judgment of the competition.

With the end of the Olympics, Kim has also ended her career with the announcement that she is retiring. Although she was only able to receive silver, she is definitely ending her career on a high note. She was able to almost flawlessly complete all her programs but was unfortunately beat out by Sotnikova. Yuna Kim’s gracefulness and talent will not be soon forgotten and everyone will highly anticipate Sotnikova’s program in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Figure skating ‘fix’ accusation gains momentum as winner pictured hugging judge

Feb 23, 2014

Eurosport

Written by Mikaela Conley

The Russian who controversially won the women’s figure skating was pictured embracing one of the judges just moments after she was awarded gold.

Adelina Sotnikova, whose routine was widely regarded as having been slightly inferior to that of South Korean runner-up Yuna Kim, was a surprise winner at Sochi, leading many fans and pundits to question the impartiality of the judges.

And, as Sotnikova dramatically ran through the hallways of the Iceberg Skating Palace searching for family and friends with whom to celebrate, cameras caught her hugging and receiving warm congratulations from many people, including a woman who had just been judging the event minutes before, fellow Russian Alla Shekhovtsova (circled above in red).

The captured moment only fueled more fury over the results of the women’s figure skating Olympic competition, when Sotnikova beat out the heavy favourite, Kim, for gold. Images of the embrace blew up on social media.

It didn't take long for people to accuse the judges of favouritism for its home competitors, when Kim, who skated undeniably beautifully, brought home silver instead of gold. Fans went so far as to create a petition on Change.org, with more than 1.5 million people, demanding "rejudgement."

The drama continued soon after the event when it was discovered that Ukrainian judge Yuri Balkov was kicked out of judging for a year after being tape-recorded by a Canadian judge trying to fix the 1998 Winter Olympics ice dancing competition. Shekhovtseva (the judge who embraced Sotnikova) is married to Russian federation president Valentin Pissev.

The International Olympic Committee denied any sort of figure skating controversy, according to USA Today.

In addition to the cases of the two questionable judges, it's also worth noting that four of the 13 free skate judges hail from former Soviet republics — Russia, Estonia, Ukraine and Azerbaijan.

Several informed participants, if also biased in their own ways, in this Reddit thread have identified peculiar marks on several jumps from Kim, and there's a broad consensus within that Sotnikova's margin of victory was too large.

U.S. figure skater Ashley Wagner, who placed 7th in the event, added to the controversy, when she publicly criticized the anonymous judging system and argued that it didn’t do any favors for the sport’s popularity as a whole.

Despite the accusations, the shady pasts of the judges and even the questionable hug, it is important to note that, despite the compromising information, there is no hard evidence of a fix in Sochi.

The image of a woman Korean television identified as Russian judge Alla Shekhovtseva hugging Russian gold medalist Adelina Sotnikova is being circulated as alleged evidence of a conspiracy to defeat South Korea’s Yuna Kim in the women’s Olympic figure skating event that ended Thursday.

The picture, which dozens of Koreans emailed me, comes from a telecast by Korean broadcaster SBS. A member of NBC’s broadcast team confirmed the scene had been picked up on backstage cameras.

(On the issue of whether it still could have been digitally falsified, photo experts who studied details in the image said the chances of it having been photo shopped were beyond remote.)

What the image shows is a case of bad judgment.

It does not offer any tangible proof that the results showed equally bad judgment.

For Shekhovtseva, wife of a top Russian figure skating federation official, to be embracing a compatriot she had just judged is just another example of the incestuous relationships the International Skating Union makes no attempt to stop. Like ISU officials, Shekhovtseva obviously saw nothing wrong in what she did — in full view of TV cameras.

Most of the time, these relationships go unnoticed because there is minimal argument about results.

But each national figure skating federation is involved in the training and nomination of its international judges. Those judges often watch practices of skaters from their own country and offer tips to help improve their scores.

That is akin to having an NFL referee from Chicago going to Bears’ practice and showing the offensive linemen how to avoid being called for holding.

That judges feel more allegiance to their national federations than they do to the world of skating always has the potential to cause controversy. International Skating Union officials simply will not acknowledge the image problems created because they don’t have independent judges.

In this case, the problem is worse because Shekhovtseva is married to Valentin Piseev, the former president and current general director of the Russian Figure Skating Federation.

The ISU has a constitutional rule, that disqualifies anyone from officiating an event who “due to their relationships, may reasonably appear to be in a conflict of interest position regarding a competing skater.’’

But ISU president Ottavio Cinquanta dismissed the notion people with such personal relationships should not be allowed to judge.

“Would you rather have an idiot acting as a judge than a good one who is a relative of the manager of a federation?” Cinquanta told the Tribune. “It is far more important to have a good judge than a possible conflict of interest.’’

The Korean Skating Union reportedly filed a protest of the women’s event with the ISU Saturday, but such an action would be futile on several counts, including not being filed in time, according to the ISU constitution.

Rule 123 allows protests of results “only in the case of incorrect mathematical calculation.”

The only thing the ISU miscalculated here is how bad it looks.

Our top five biggest scandals at the Sochi Games

From figure skating to luge, these Games had it all

With Canada’s latest speed skating disappointment being blamed on its alleged poor-sport Polish opponents, here’s a look at the top five controversies (non-Pussy Riot division) of the Sochi Games:

QUICK'S POST

With the Russia-U.S. men’s hockey game tied 2-2, defenceman Fedor Tyutin blasted a shot into the top corner to send the home crowd into delirium. But sliding U.S. goalie Jonathan Quick had knocked a goalpost slightly off its peg seconds earlier, and upon review the goal was disallowed. The Americans won in an unforgettable shootout and Russian fans cried conspiracy because the referee, who made the correct call, is American. Russian blue-liner Slava Voynov said Quick — his L.A. Kings teammate, no less — knocked the post off intentionally.

SKATING SCANDAL - PART 1

When Russian figure skater Adelina Sotnikova won the women’s figure skating gold, fans worldwide erupted in anger. Yuna Kim, the South Korean darling and defendng Olympic champ, settled for silver — but within hours, an online petition had more than one million signatures demanding an inquiry into the scoring. The fact one Russian skating official’s wife was a judge probably doesn’t help the ol’ optics.

SKATING SCANDAL - PART 2

Early in these Games, a respected French publication, L’Equipe, cited an unnamed source in reporting the Russians and Americans had a quid-pro-quo in the works: If the American judges prop up the Russians in the team event, the Russians would do the same in ice dancing. Ho-hum, another day, another scandal — that was essentially the reaction of Canadian stars Scott Moir and Tessa Virtue, who finished with silver behind U.S. ice-dance rivals Charlie White and Meryl Davis. For many observers, though, it was clear a fix was in. (Russia’s team-skating gold appeared to be won on merit, though.)

WIN? OR LUGE?

Of all the conflicts, this one might warrant the most attention, but received the least: After finishing fourth in the men’s luge relay, Canadian coach Wolfgang Staudinger accused Russian officials of raising the temperatures of pipes inside the track after their athletes went, thus slowing down those who, like Canada, followed. Russia got the silver, and Canada got the shaft, Staudinger said.

GIVING IT AWAY

The Canadian speed skating team ended a disappointing Sochi Games by losing the bronze-medal race in the men’s team pursuit to Poland. The skaters and their coach say Poland’s athletes didn’t give it their all in a semifinal race against the Dutch 24 hours earlier, planning instead to save something for the bronze-medal battle. “I think you’re here, you show up, you give it all you can,” said coach Bart Schouten.

1.7 Million People Think Yesterday's Women's Figure Skating Event Was a Scam (170

1.7 Million People Think Yesterday's Women's Figure Skating Event Was a Scam                                              Image Credit: AP

The news: On Thursday, Russia's Adelina Sotnikova edged out Korean favorite and 2010 Olympic gold medalist Yuna Kim to win Russia's first Olympic gold medal in ladies' singles figure skating. The 17-year-old Russian put on a spectacular performance with excellent technicality, but some critics are saying her routine shouldn't have earned her the gold over Kim.

"I was shocked," Kurt Browning, a four-time figure skating world champion, told the New York Times. "What, suddenly, she just became a better skater overnight? I don't know what happened. I'm still trying to figure it out."

Though the two skaters performed strong routines, some have said that Kim out-skated Sotnikova, but because the new scoring system relies so heavily on subjective numerical analysis, it's possible for skater A to score higher than skater B even if skater B put on a more fluid performance, as long as skater A's movements were more precise and technically perfect. This is probably what happened on Thursday.

But that doesn't mean everyone is happy about it.

"It's not fair to skaters who work so hard," said American skater Ashley Wagner. "People need to be held accountable. They need to get rid of the anonymity if they're going to create a fan base. People don't want to see a sport where someone falls down and goes above someone who doesn't."

And it seems Wagner may be right. Shortly after the results were announced and Sotnikova was awarded gold, someone started a petition on Change.org to "Open Investigation in Judging Decisions of Women's Figure Skating and Demand Rejudgement at the Sochi Olympics." As of 11:00 a.m. ET, they've collected 1,702,162 signatures out of the 3 million needed.

The background: Figure skating is a mysterious sport. For the average fan watching, the fact that an anonymous panel awards seemingly arbitrary points makes a lot of the outcomes suspicious. We've already seen figure skating-scoring controversy earlier in these Winter Olympics when Wagner called "bullshit" on her lower-than-expected scores. However there seemed to be a perfectly reasonable explanation for what happened there. But could the scoring get so suspicious that there's an actual conspiracy going on?

If the Change.org petition is any indication, it would seem that at least some people think something's afoot. Additionally, the past instances of questionable outcomes, as well as the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics judging scandal, point to the idea that stricter judging oversight might be necessary.

But of course, the IOC was quick to dismiss even the slightest whiff of a problem.

"I think you're getting a little ahead of yourself," said IOC spokesman Mark Adams. "I think first off we have to see if there's an official complaint, because the people concerned I'd assume would make a complaint and it would go to the federation. I'm not aware there's been such a complaint and if there was they'd got through the federation. I don't think it's even happened yet. If it does that will be the first step to go through if there isn't a credible complaint we wouldn't take it any further."

And Adams actually does have a solid point. Even if a bunch of fans complain about the outcome, until someone actually involved with the competitions makes a formal complaint or petition, there's little the IOC can or perhaps even should do in this situation. That said, it's possible some competitors are scared to voice their opinions, fearing a bad reputation within the figure skating community, but then we're just caught in a terrible catch-22.

The takeaway: While some people seem pretty outraged by these outcomes, most competitors are taking the judges' scores.

"The scores are given by the judges, so I am not in the right position to comment on it," Kim said. "There's nothing that will change with my words. The biggest thing was I felt relieved because it was over."

But regardless of how the athletes feel, as long as fans are unable to understand the convoluted and opaque scoring system, the sport will remain a once-every-four-years event and eventually support could progressively wane.

Change.org

Frankreichs Sportzeitung „L’Equipe“ schrieb empört: „Skandal“.

Olympic Figure Skating Controversy: Judging System Is Most to Blame for Uproar

Figure skating’s latest controversy—a debate over whether Russian Adelina Sotnikova truly deserved to win gold over South Korea's Kim Yuna—proves one thing: The sport has learned little from the mother of all scoring scandals at the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City.

Sotnikova, 17, won Olympic gold over defending champion Kim, 23, on Thursday. Italy’s Carolina Kostner took bronze. Kim led entering the free skate with less than a point separating the three. The trio skated at a high level, virtually clean, yet Sotnikova’s margin of victory was a remarkable 5.5 points (224.59 to 219.11). Costner scored 216.73.

Experts, including figure skaters still closely connected with the sport, are divided on who should have won and if there were improprieties.

Some admit they can’t explain the marks at all, which leaves little hope for the rest of us.

"I just couldn’t see how Yuna and Sotnikova were so close in the components," former gold medalist and current broadcaster Kurt Browning said in Sochi, according to Juliet Macur of the New York Times, who also provided a chart explaining how the scoring might have worked. "I was shocked. What, suddenly, she just became a better skater overnight? I don’t know what happened. I’m still trying to figure it out."

U.S. skater Ashley Wagner finished seventh, behind Russian phenom Julia Lipnitskaia, who fell twice while Wagner kept her feet. Speaking about the judging system to reporters in Sochi, Wagner said, "It’s confusing and we need to make it clear for people. I’m speechless. This sport needs to be held accountable if it wants more people to believe in it."

A petition that was started on the Change.org website calling for an investigation into the controversy had already registered 1.6 million signatures by Friday afternoon, one of the biggest petitions the site has ever seen.

Many are likely from South Korea, no stranger to Olympic protests.

In 2002, South Korean fans crashed the U.S. Olympic Committee server following Apolo Ohno’s short-track gold medal in the men’s 1,500-meter, when South Korean Kim Dong-Sung crossed the finish line first but was disqualified.

When “Queen Kim,” one of Korea’s biggest celebrities, was only given silver in Sochi, the lead headline on The Korea Times front page read, “This is really, really unfair!”

A spokesman for the International Olympic Committee said the organization would not take action because no formal protest had been filed.

In the wake of Salt Lake, judging and judges are still suspect. The new scoring system, which was supposed prevent judging shenanigans, has, in one way, made cheating easier.

AP

And the same guy who was in charge for Salt Lake City, Italy’s Ottavio Cinquanta, is still in charge of the international skating federation, which oversees figure skating and speedskating.

Two changes that need to be made: Skating must, 1. Get rid of anonymous judging; 2. Require that their judges not have a conflict of interest with the skaters they are marking.

Obvious, right? Well, not to skating.

We know this because, along with a new scoring system that replaced the old 6.0 system, skating actually installed anonymous judging after Salt Lake. The 2002 Olympic scandal involved a French federation judge who said that she was pressured into trading votes with the Russians to ensure a Russian victory in the pairs, allegedly in exchange for a French vote in the ice dance.

Officials said anonymity would protect judges from retribution from their own federations for not favoring a home skater at a competition, or not agreeing to swap votes with another country.

Each nation’s federation certifies and hires its own judges, then has the power to assign him or her to events of various importance. The Olympics, as you can imagine, is the most prestigious assignment.

The furor over Thursday’s results, where some believe Sotnikova was given inflated marks by Russian or former Soviet-bloc judges in her upset victory over Kim, was partly fueled by the fact it’s difficult to figure who scored how, since it’s anonymous.

That’s a problem. Figure skating’s credibility suffers when its judges are not held accountable for the marks they hand out.

The sport’s credibility also suffers with real or perceived conflicts of interest. In a development that further fuels the controversy, reports revealed one of the judges, Alla Shekhovtseva, is the wife of Valentin Pissev, the Russian Skating Federation general director.

Not only that, but the Ukrainian judge, Yuri Balkov, was suspended a year for his involvement in a results-fixing incident in 1998.

Cinquanta’s response to both issues, from the Chicago Tribune’s Phil Hersh:

“Would you rather have an idiot acting as a judge than a good one who is a relative of the manager of a federation?” Cinquanta said.  “It is far more important to have a good judge than a possible conflict of interest.

“I can’t suspend a person for life for a minor violation. (Balkov) is a matter for the Ukraine federation, because they chose to send him.”

Who is in charge of the sport here: the international federation or the national (Russian) federation?

On the wife-husband conflict: hard to believe that skating federations can’t find knowledgable judges who aren’t related to federation officials. What about retired skaters or retired coaches? Is it really that difficult?

It is if you can’t even see the problem. That’s been the knock on the international skating federation for years, that leadership is either too arrogant or too clueless to understand how their sport is perceived.

Cinquanta, whose background is in speedskating, was named ISU president in 1994 and seems to be part of the problem. This is the guy who, as the Salt Lake scandal was engulfing his sport, famously told a packed room full of media: “I don’t know figure skating so well.”

After the Sochi Games, turns out, neither do we.

Sotnikova encensée sur fond de controverse - [Waiting for translation/

Sotnikova Beat Kim Yu-Na? Figure Skating Is Probably Corrupt (But We Knew That)

Feb 21, 2014

The Daily Beast

Maybe it was rigged. Maybe it wasn’t. Maybe the judges scored the Russian skater generously because they just wanted to be done with it all and get out of Sochi alive.

Adelina Sotnikova skated beautifully Thursday night, the night she won the gold medal for women’s figure skating…and the night she sparked a global inferno of anger.

The little 17-year-old Russian cherub lutzed and salchowed like she was born for that expressed purpose. She spun like the Tasmanian Devil after four bumps of cocaine. She flitzed and flounced around the arena like a spritely Soviet fairy. And she won the gold medal. It is bullshit.

It is ridiculous because, as much of a leaping, spinning, talented nymph on skates Sotnikova is, and as spectacular as her performance was—the best of her life—South Korea’s Kim Yu-Na, the reigning gold medalist, was better. Sure, when you break down the scores of the two skaters, Sotnikova scored higher, which should mean she was better. But a world of people who care so very passionately about figure skating for exactly 10 days every four years beg to differ.

They think that Sotnikova’s scores were inflated, that the judging was rigged—and possibly because Sotnikova is Russian and the Olympics were in Russia and Russians are corrupt and evil and dastardly, according to all the Saturday morning cartoons we watched as kids.

More, the “was Sotnikova’s win rigged” controversy is just the latest in an astonishing number of scandals for a sport in which 80-pound girls twirl around on ice in glittery dresses for four minutes. Here’s the evidence everyone is citing to argue that Sotnikova’s scores were juiced in order for her to triumph over Kim.

First of all, everyone has eyes. This is an important one, because everyone’s eyes saw two very distinct things: Sotnikova totally effed up a jump, bungling a landing, while Kim skated an absolutely flawless routine with nary a hair on her head wisping out of place.

But perhaps our eyes collectively deceived us, in which case it’s time to get into the nitty-gritty of the score. The Wire’s Alex Abad-Santos helps out. So the first thing everyone needs to know is that Sotnikova started with a higher base level score than Kim, because the technical difficulty of Sotnikova’s routine was much higher than Kim’s. Fair. You gotta play the game, gurl, and the game is to jump and spin a lot. So when Sotnikova stepped out of her jumping combination, the judges did penalize her. But because she had more triple jumps overall than Kim, the penalty still had Sotnikova scoring higher.

But wait! There’s more!

Skaters are also scored on choreography and artistry. There’s a third name in this whole judge-rigging brouhaha, and that’s Italy’s Carolina Kostner. Kostner is known for her choreography. It’s kind of her thing. She was, according to skating experts, spellbinding on Thursday night. (Personally, I thought her choreography a little too closely resembled Liz Lemon’s dance moves in the opening credits for the Dealbreakers Talk Show. But I’m no expert.) In any case, everyone who knows about these things agreed that, while technically superior, Sotnikova was the Joey Fatone of the group. She was leagues behind her competition. Her artistry and choreography was way worse than everyone else’s, with moves “you might see a trainer perform on a sea mammal,” according to Abad-Santos.

And yet, Sotnikova's choreography scores were higher than Kostner’s. And—remember?—choreography is Kostner’s thing! They only explanation, according to the internet: it was rigged!

There’s more evidence, too, to support the “Rigged for the Russians” conspiracy theory, specifically about inflated judges’ scores.

For example, tricks are given Grade of Execution scores, ranging from -3 to +3 depending on how well the trick was performed. There were two judges—Abad-Santos lays down good evidence that they could be from Russia and the Ukraine—that flooded Sotnikova with +3s, even though she fell, and Kim with just +1s, even though she was flawless. Plus, in other events at the Olympics, Russians like the gold medal-winning pairs team of Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov were given positive Grade of Execution points even though Volosozhar botched a jump landing.

Here’s the real eyebrow-raiser, though. “Not only do Sotnikova’s scores look like an anomaly compared to her peers, they put Sotnikova’s performance up there with some of the best scores in history,” says Abad-Santos. She improved her best free skate score by 20 points. It was, truly, the best skate of her life, but that jump would be like getting a 1000 on a practice SAT and suddenly getting a 1400 when you take the real thing. (1600-point scale…I won’t even attempt to understand that new 2400-point system.) Sotnikova’s teammate Julia Lipnitskaya was also scored, according to experts, way higher than she should have been.

So…score inflation for the Russians! (Allegedly!) Is it true? Who knows. Was it on purpose? Who could prove. Maybe there was rigging by Russian judges. Maybe there wasn’t. Maybe the other judges scored the Russian skaters generously because they just wanted to be done with it all and get out of goddamned Sochi alive.

How does Kim Yu-Na being absolutely freaking robbed of the gold medal (we love you, Kim) rank among past controversies? Well, figure skating, it turns out, has more scandals than sequins.

There was that time Nancy Kerrigan was whacked in the knee by a baton-wielding assailant in 1994. Hit in the knee! I mean, can you imagine? And it turned out that her U.S. teammate Tonya Harding was charged with helping the attacker, her ex-husband. It was the eye-opening moment for sports fans: figure skating is as brutal as it is bedazzled.

And in 1998, at the Nagano Games, a Canadian judge recorded a phone conversation with a Ukrainian judge in which the Ukrainian judge asked the Canadian to goose the scores for Ukraine in exchange for the same favor for Canada’s ice dancing team.

There was also that time that Russia actually did cheat! Well, along with France. But still! In 2002, adorable Canadians Jame Sale and David Pelletier pulled the original Kim Yu-Na and skated the perfect, should’ve been gold medal-winning pairs skate, only to finish behind the inferior Russian team. A French judge later admitted that she fudged the Canadians’ scores to help the Russians, in exchange for Russia to help France in ice dancing. (In the end, everyone made nice and Sale and Pelletier were also given a gold.)

The good ole U.S. isn’t immune to the corruption of the sport, either. In 2006, a U.S. judge sparked a flurry of bad press after an email had leaked that he sent to other judges and skating officials encouraging them to be exceptionally scrutinous of Russian frontrunner Evgeni Plushenko’s skating, as he apparently has bad transitions. It led to accusations of a North American lobby against Europe’s skaters.

Even in Sochi, a controversy erupted when the U.S. named Ashley Wagner to the Olympic team on the merits of her entire body of work—even though it was Mirai Nagasu who actually qualified for the team at the U.S. Championships and not Wagner.

OK, sure. There’s probably corruption in every sport, or competition, not matter how silly and slight the sport or competition might look to outsiders. I mean, remember how outraged Elton John was when he thought American Idol was corrupt and racist? Hell, there’s probably even score rigging at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.

But that knowledge doesn’t mend the heartbreak we all felt watching Kim Yu-Na gingerly dab the tears from her eyes as she learned that her phenomenal skate had only, and perhaps unjustly, earned her the silver medal. It was—and I apologize for not having the class and grace in the absence of justice as Kim Yu-Na—total bullshit.

Yuna Kim Sochi Scandal: South Korean Figure Skater Robbed Of Gold In Russia’s Controversial Olympics

Yuna Kim received the silver medal in women's figure skating, despite what many believe was a gold-medal effort. Reuters

SOCHI, Russia – If Russian President Vladimir Putin’s overall intent for the 2014 Winter Olympics was to show the West that the nation deserves to be taken more seriously, the results of Thursday’s women’s figure skating competition, as well as some other notable absurdities related to the Sochi Games, are a funny way of showing it.

To many of the unbiased spectators and media at Iceberg Skating Palace on Thursday, it seemed obvious that South Korean superstar Yuna Kim, the gold medal winner at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, had skated to a nearly flawless performance in the free skate, and after leading in Wednesday’s short program.

But when Kim’s final score (219.11) was read, the gold medal would go to Russia’s Adelina Sotnikova (224.59), leading to a cascade of roaring cheers from the large Russian contingent in the arena, which weren’t drowned out by sharp, derisive whistles and jeers from others. While Sotnikova had a strong performance, Kim was particularly exquisite, with perhaps just one wobble on her jump denying her perfection.

The final scores seemed to stink of “home-ice advantage” and served as another painful reminder of how past Olympics have been shrouded in controversy. The consensus opinion of the skeptics exiting Iceberg was that Russia needed to go home with a gold medal, and the best Russian was destined to finish on top no matter how well the actual top skater performed.

The most magnified issue plaguing the controversy was the collection of judges who were well-represented by Eastern bloc nations, and their anonymous scoring. Sotnikova’s technical score was 5.85 points better than Kim, though Kim was able to land nearly all of her jumps without any noticeable difficulty.

Sotnikova’s first-place score wasn’t completely outlandish. While many would view the results as clearly biased toward the Moscow native, Sotnikova did land seven triple jumps in her long program to Kim’s six.

Though it may not have been the greatest miscarriage of justice in sports history, it still seems difficult to overlook how Kim did exactly what she needed to in order to win gold, and popular opinion sure seems to be on Kim’s side. On change.org, there are already roughly 1.6 million petitions signed for an “Open Investigation into Judging Decisions of Women's Figure Skating and Demand Rejudgement at the Sochi Olympics.”

The jam-packed post-competition press conference felt surreal. Russian media would loudly cheer Sotnikova’s remarks, while a stoic Kim just stared ahead with what appeared to be indifferent interest in answering questions or being in the spotlight.

Sotnikova, who is just 17 years old, seemed to be oblivious to the fact that she received what most would judge was a gift, as she gleamed with pride over her performance. Meanwhile, veteran skater Carolina Kostner was beaming with content, seemingly satisfied with a bronze effort that was only slightly surprising.

And then there was Kim, the alleged victim of gold-medal robbery, taking it all in.

“The most important thing for me is to participate in the Olympic Winter Games,” Kim said. “It’s my last competition, and I’m a happy to be here.”

While many tend to perceive figure skaters as being consumed with gold-medal aspirations, Kim provided little evidence that she was desperate to win a second gold. Even her body language in warm ups and the short program indicated that she was so capable of nailing a triple Axel that it no longer felt like a challenge.

There also may have been some foretelling in her Wednesday statements.

“Personally, it’s not my ambition to defend my gold medal,” Kim said after the short program.

“It’s meaningful, but not significant. I did well today, but nobody knows what will happen tomorrow.”

The very next day, staring ahead while providing just short answers to reporters’ questions, Kim seemed to be well above the pettiness of gold, silver or bronze, or even judging controversies. When she announced her retirement to reporters, she gave little elaboration and showed almost no emotion.

Sotnikova would oddly exit the press conference during the last question when she learned it wasn’t directed to her, while Kim and Kostner remained seated for the question. It seemed that Sotnikova wasn’t being rude or a prima donna by leaving, but just didn’t know press-conference etiquette.

It was that kind of night in Sochi. It was hard to tell what you were hearing and what you were seeing.

As most know, sports scandals are nothing new, and not just at the Olympics. Whenever a sport or competition’s outcome is decided by judges, controversy often follows not far behind.

Perhaps the most dreaded phrase in boxing is, “Ladies and gentlemen, we go to the scorecards.” When you compare judges’ scorecards with that of sports writers, popular opinion often seems to sway to the journalists’ opinions, which was the case with Manny Pacquiao’s loss to Timothy Bradley in 2012, just to cite one example.

So why would figure skating in Russia be any different? It isn’t even new in Sochi.

Near the start of the Games, French sports publication L’Equipe published a report that U.S. and Russian figure skating judges had conspired to help Russia win the gold in the Olympic team event at the expense of Canada by giving higher scores to a U.S. ice dancing pair. The article would receive a sharp rebuttal from the U.S. Skating Federation, but the seeds of skepticism were firmly planted.

Figure skating competitions revolve around judges rating artistry and a skater’s ability to effectively land a number of spins and difficult jumps. The entire sport lends itself to debate, and it’s of little surprise that there is plenty to debate in Russia.

It didn’t help that Russia had failed to win gold in much of the high-profile Winter Olympic events, such as the early elimination of the men’s hockey team. Entering the Sochi Games with a “gold medal or bust” attitude, they not only failed to earn first-place honors, but were bounced in the quarterfinals by underdog Finland. The combination of the host nation’s medal struggles, along with perhaps the perception that South Korea would enter the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang with two-straight gold medals in the same prominent event, may have been additional reasons for judges denying Kim her rightful place atop the medal stand.

On the outside looking in after the free skate were some prolific skaters who also may have also been denied their rightful spot, like Mao Asada of Japan and Ashley Wagner of the U.S.

Russia’s Yulia Lipnitskaya finished at a highly questionable fifth place, despite a rather uneven performance, and one in which she took a tumble. Some might wonder if she had executed the jump with even moderate success that it would meant Kim dropping to a bronze medal.

The 15-year-old Lipnitskaya seemed to received some help from the judges after finishing ahead of seventh-place Wagner. The Russian barely edged Wagner in the short program, 65.23 to 65.21. In the free skate, the judges generously awarded Lipnitskaya a 135.34 score, which was well ahead of Wagner’s 127.99.

Combining Sotnikova and Lipnitskaya’s inflated scores in front of their home crowd seemed ample evidence to some that changes need to be made in the sport.

“It’s not fair to skaters who work so hard,” said the candid Wagner. “People need to be held accountable. They need to get rid of the anonymity if they’re going to create a fan base. People don’t want to see a sport where someone falls down and goes above someone who doesn’t.”

While figure skating has its own governing body, and is separate from Russian politics, it doesn’t change the fact that the controversial outcome of perhaps the most visible sport in the Winter Olympics just plain looks bad for Russia. Whether valid or not, disgruntled global viewers want to point the finger some place, and why not at a country that has a dubious reputation when it comes to fairness.

It’s yet another public relations nightmare for a country that is viewed as stuck in a tyrannical past with an overall flawed way of doing just about everything. The gold-medal controversy seems to accomplish the antithesis of what is perceived that Putin had set out to accomplish: to showcase what’s great about Russia.

But the outrage in Iceberg Skate Palace pales in comparison to the outrage that should be happening outside the arena. The so-called “protest zone,” set up in a town of Khosta and about a dozen kilometers away, is barren, with the consensus reasoning being that there is fear that protesters will be punished for expressing their views in public. It also demonstrates how the nation finds a way to bury dissent with bureaucracy.

The punk activist rock group Pussy Riot knows all about it. Video footage showed band members Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina, who were recently released from being detained in the nearby town of Adler, and other band members, being beaten by Cossacks.

Indeed, figure skating is probably the most irrelevant scandal plaguing the Sochi Games. There is a long list of larger issues, such as reports of environmental damage caused by the construction of the Olympics.

Meanwhile, numerous journalists have been killed for their dissent of Kremlin policies, and laws are in place forbidding gay “propaganda.” According to a Forbes report in May, the average wage of a Moscow resident is 53,953 rubles (roughly $1,700) per month, while the all-Russia average is 25,046 (around $800), in a country where things seem to be much more expensive than other countries.

Olympics sports are a pleasant distraction for most people, but this Olympics is different, and the overt examples of human rights violations in Russia are not as subjective as figure skating scores.

What is happening to gays, brave journalists, grossly underpaid Russian workers, and to Russia’s environment is the real travesty.

The Best- And Worst-Dressed Figure Skaters At The Olympics

Figure skating is the most popular sport in the Winter Olympics. And it's no surprise why.

From the music, to the jumps, to the lifts, to the costumes, everything is carefully rehearsed and perfected.

But let's talk about the costumes. There's no question about it, they are all outrageous. Sequins, sequins, and more sequins. Some, however, are outrageous and ugly.

BEST: Yuna Kim of South Korea looked stunning in chartreuse.

WORST: Russia's Adelina Sotnikova's dress was ill-fitting.

Sotnikova gives Russia the most controversial gold

• The host country gets the first title in its history in this discipline

• Foreign media seeking a 'rational' explanation concerning Adelina

• The Korean Kim Yuna had to settle for silver after getting 219.11 points

While the little Adelina Sotnikova cried inconsolably when she learned of her Olympic gold medal. While those 12,000 people who packed the Iceberg Skating Palace in Sochi excitedly chanted "ru-ssi-ya". While the whole country gave a sigh of relief, the American and Asian press did not hide their astonishment. "Yesterday the Russian national hockey team was eliminated; does anyone think they could miss THIS gold?" asked the figure skating expert from NBC, Joe Batagglia.

And the victory of Adelina Sotnikova, "protected" by the Russian armada, was not without controversy. Of the six contenders for gold, the first one of them was another local star, the very young Yulia Lipnitskaya, just 15 years old, who could not withstand the pressure of being the public favorite and Putin himself, went to the middle of the ice with her wonderful interpretation of Schindler's List. She herself knew it was not enough to get on the podium. She'll have to wait. She has a long career ahead.

224.59 points

Then we turn to the Italiana Carolina Kostner, who at age 27 came to Sochi willing to get a medal she was missing, an Olympic one, after collecting medals of all colors in global and European over the last decade. Carolina shined as in few nights, and Ravel's Bolero earned her a third place for the taste of glory.

Because gold, weighed heavily for the two Americans who got into the fight, Ashley Wagner (who finished fourth) and Gracie Gold (sixth) {{{they mixed up Wagner and Gold’s placement here}}}, would be about the two: the Russian aspirant/semi unknown Sotnikova, and the Queen of Ice, South Korean and gold medalist in Vancouver, Yuna Kim.

First it was Sotnikova who furnished her program, with elements of great difficulty and some impossible pirouettes, cheered to exhaustion by the tireless Russian public, for a total of 224.59 points which would be very difficult to reach.

The Ukrainian judge and suspicions

In fact only achievable until yesterday by the Olympic champion, twice world champion and unparalleled media star in her country, Yuna Kim. She went out to the ice with calm serenity, and completed an almost perfect program. However, her face upon hearing the score said it all. "Only" 219.11 points! … Sufficient for silver but not gold. While she, bewildered, accepted the result, the hall erupted in cheers and brought Adelina to tears.

For the first time in the history of the Games, Russia gets gold in women's figure skating. Meanwhile, foreign media is looking for a "rational" explanation about Adelina (her win).

In the end, the absence of American judges, or the presence of a Ukrainian, Yuri Balkov, who in 1998 was suspended for one year for "rigging" the scores, has only set off alarms. While in Russia celebrates the victory of Adelina in style, the world continues without giving it credit. And still considers Kim Yuna the Ice Queen.

The Queen Robbed in Russia? Figure Skater Wins Controversial Gold on Home Ice over Yuna Kim

Feb 20, 2014

Breitbart

Written by Tony Lee

They call her the Michael Jordan of figure skating. But on Thursday night in Sochi, South Korea's Yuna Kim discovered there were no "Jordan rules" in Russia as "Queen Yuna" stunningly and controversially won silver in her attempt to be the third figure skater in history to win back-to-back golds. In fact, the opposite may have applied to her.

UPDATE: According to Christine Brennan of USA Today, this may have been worse than 2002:

One of the nine judges who picked a young Russian skater over two more refined competitors for the Olympic gold medal Thursday night was suspended for a year for trying to fix an event at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano.

And another is the wife of the president of the Russian figure skating federation. Another Olympics, another huge skating controversy involving the countries of the former Soviet Union.

Adelina Sotnikova of Russia won the country's first-ever women's figure skating gold on home ice with some questionable scoring that has already generated plenty of buzz and controversy for all the wrong reasons. Sotnikova was described as the "chosen one" in an Olympics marred by rumors of potential fixes being in for the Russians in a sport notorious for shady activity (see: ice dancing at the 2002 Winter Olympics).

Consider this: Sotnikova did not land all of her jumps cleanly, yet scored 149.95 in the free skate. Yuna Kim scored 144.19 and Italy's Carolina Kostner scored 142.61. In 2010, Yuna Kim shattered the world record at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver in what was hailed by nearly every figure skating analyst as one of the greatest performances in the history of the sport. Yuna's score then? 150.06. That's barely above what Sotnikova received with a performance in which she did not even land all of her jumps correctly.

Sotnikova's total score for the event was 224.59 while Kim received 219.11. Kostner of Italy got 216.73. Kim led by mere tenths over both figure skaters entering the free skate.

Those watching and commentating on the event scratched their heads when Russian Yulia Lipnitskaya, who fell twice and stumbled around on the ice, received higher technical marks than Japan's Mao Asada, who turned in a world-class and flawless free skate after stumbling to 16th after the short program.

Things got stranger when Sotnikova stumbled and two-footed a landing, yet still received far superior technical marks than Kostner.

Kim was the final skater on the night. And the woman who has what is unquestionably the most difficult routine, hit all of her elements. Though Sotnikova had one more jump in her routine, Kim's degree of difficulty was greater on the non-jump elements. Yet Sotnikova got perfect marks on all of her spins and footwork while Yuna, doing more difficult elements and considered the world's best at them, got a couple of subpar marks from the judges that were enough to make the difference.

Yuna announced her retirement after the event even though she helped secure the 2018 Games for South Korea, and she is still considered one of the greatest figure skaters of all time. And on Thursday she was trying to go out at the pinnacle of her sport in a way Michael Jordan (Kim, like Jordan, took years off from the sport only to come back to dominate effortlessly upon return) initially did before Jordan un-retired and decided to give basketball another try.

It was, though, not meant for Kim, who leaves Russia with more in common with the 1972 USA men's national basketball team than Jordan.

Immediately, reporters spoke about the "judging controversy" while numerous analysts said that Kim had the far better performance and Sotnikova's huge score in the free skate seemed inflated and seemed like a score that tried to leave nothing to chance. Nobody knows how the judges scores, since the total scores just pop up on screen, clouding the process in intrigue. Some believed that Sotnikova was nowhere near even eight points better than Kostner, which is what her scorecard said. Others thought the real battle should have been between Sotnikova and Kostner for silver. After the program concluded, Yuna Kim's name was trending worldwide on Twitter. There was no buzz surrounding Sotnikova and plenty around the result.

Asked about the results, Kim replied with class: "Well, the scores are given by the judges so I am not in the right position to comment on it. There's nothing that will change with my words. The most important thing for me is to participate in these Games. This was my last participation in the competition, so I'm happy with that."
